International Advisory Board Chair

UWA Public Policy Institute

Term: Initial term of up to 4 years with potential for extension. The Chair is an unpaid appointment made by The University of Western Australia.

Overview
The UWA Public Policy Institute (UWA PPI) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to fill the vacancy of Chair, Public Policy Institute International Advisory Board.

The UWA PPI International Advisory Board is an advisory board established under the authority of the Vice-Chancellor. The role of the Board is to provide oversight and strategic direction for the Institute. Board members are appointed by The University of Western Australia.

The position of Chair provides leadership to the Board, convenes Board meetings, works with the Institute Director and provides advice from the Board on the core activities of the Institute, and reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in the dispensation of these duties.

UWA Public Policy Institute
The UWA Public Policy Institute (UWA PPI) is an initiative which launched in 2018. The Institute aims to maximise the translation of the University’s research to policy impact in Western Australia, Australia, and the Indian Ocean region.

The Institute works to position UWA as a go-to university for governments, corporates and NGOs, and to connect UWA’s research expertise with the needs of policymakers. To this end, the functions of the Institute include:

  • Providing thought leadership and maximising the policy impact of UWA research in WA, Australia, and the Indian Ocean region;
  • Raising the profile among policy decision-makers of existing UWA research activities which impact on WA, Australia, and the Indian Ocean region;
  • Developing the skills and capacity of UWA researchers to work with government; and
  • Producing policy-focused reports and public events on social and economic indicators.

Responsibilities of Chair

  • Provides leadership to the International Advisory Board and chairs meetings;
  • Works with the Institute Director and provides strategic advice to inform the core activities of the Institute;
  • Supports the coordination and planning of Board membership, including the recruitment of new Board members;
  • Represents PPI to executive stakeholders in government, Parliament, business and not-for-profits for Institute activities; and
  • Reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in the dispensation of the above duties.

Responsibilities of International Advisory Board Members

  • Provides oversight and strategic direction for the Institute and supports the implementation of the Three-Year Strategy ;
  • Advises on public policy matters relating to the research engagement and impact of UWA;
  • Facilitates professional relationships and opportunities to support the strategic development of the Institute; and
  • Delivers feedback on the performance of the Institute relative to its strategic goals and key pillars: policy discussion, policy skills and policy connectivity.

Board Meetings
The Board meets a minimum of two times per year and may meet more frequently at the discretion of the Chair. Meetings may be attended in-person or online.

Remuneration
As a non-executive Advisory Board, there is no remuneration attached to Board membership. Incidental expenses related to meeting attendance and participation at Institute activities will be reimbursed by UWA.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
We are currently seeking a Chair with the following specific skills, knowledge and experience. Applicants should also meet the specified general requirements.

Specific:

  • Extensive experience as a non-executive Director and Chair, with recent Board and governance experience.
  • Be an eminent person with the reputation and caliber to represent UWA PPI to government, executive stakeholders, and the international research community.
  • Commitment to the mission of UWA PPI in connecting the University’s research knowledge with the needs of policymakers and research end-users.
  • Extensive networks and ability to influence within Western Australia and nationally.

General:

  • Previous experience of senior leadership in government, public service, business or not-for-profits.
  • Be free from any interest and any business or other affiliations which could reasonably be perceived to interfere with the Chair’s ability to act in the best interests of UWA PPI.
  • Flexible and innovative, with the ability to take a collaborative approach to decision-making and strategic advice.
  • Strong commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Be available for appointment from March 2023.
