Interdisciplinary Research Fellow in Biomedicine, Self and Society

The Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society at the Usher Institute within The University of Edinburgh is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences to join the Centre’s Beyond Engagement theme.

The Opportunity:

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Wellcome funded Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society at the University of Edinburgh.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Centre’s theme leads for Beyond Engagement (Professor Sarah Cunningham-Burley and Dr Sarah Chan) and Engagement Manager (Dr Ian Muchamore) to design and deliver a research project related to the ‘Beyond Engagement’ theme within the Centre, and contribute to the development of the Centre’s engagement strategy. Your application and project will be expected to relate to at least one of the three following areas of scholarship, while we explicitly welcome interdisciplinary approaches to each research area and your project: :

  • Bioethics and/or philosophy
  • Socio-legal studies
  • Social sciences and/or history
  • We are seeking applicants with experience of undertaking engagement activities, and combining theoretical and practical expertise to develop novel approaches to engagement and research. You will work closely with Dr Sarah Chan and Professor Sarah Cunningham-Burley as theme leads and Ian Muchamore, the Centre’s Engagement lead. 

    This is an exciting opportunity to work with a group of established and emerging leaders in health related social science and humanities, and to help shape a programme of cutting-edge interdisciplinary research into the role and direction of biomedicine, health and health care today.     Your skills and attributes for success: 

    •    PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. moral or political philosophy/bioethics, law, sociology, anthropology or other relevant field), or equivalent research experience
    •    Familiarity with and expertise in knowledge exchange and public engagement
    •    Demonstrable experience of combining theory an practice in developing approaches to engagement
    •    Knowledge and experience of undertaking research in the relevant methodology/ies in your field(s)
    •    Experience of or willingness to engage in interdisciplinary academic activities
