Position Title: Intern – Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Protection

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

As an important function of its mandate, IOM is the Global Cluster Lead Agency for Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) for disaster-induced displacement situations under the 2005 IASC Humanitarian Reform. In line with the commitments to the global Call to Action on Protection Against Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies, and in accordance with the IASC Guidelines for Integrating Gender-Based Violence Interventions in Humanitarian Action (2015), IOM has been working with the support of the Safe from the Start initiative, to improve GBV prevention and risk mitigation in Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) operations worldwide. Seeking to consolidate and expand upon pilot initiatives, IOM’s interventions are designed to reduce vulnerabilities to GBV at the onset of emergencies, by building the capacity of field practitioners to identify, prevent and mitigate GBV risks; providing innovative tools to improve the management of sectoral responses and coordination of service provision in response to identified risks; enhancing operational collaboration between CCCM, GBV and other specialized Protection actors; and improving women’s participation in camp governance structures.

Supervision

Under the overall supervision of the Global CCCM Cluster Coordinator and the direct supervision of the CCCM and Protection Officer, the Intern – Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Protection will assist the CCCM team in the development, review and implementation of an online course on GBV risk mitigation for CCCM practitioners, in addition to supporting other initiatives related to the integration of Protection- related considerations in CCCM operations, with a focus on GBV risk mitigation, child protection and disability inclusion.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Support the content finalization of an interagency online course on GBV risk mitigation for CCCM practitioners, in coordination with the Global CCCM Cluster, its partners and relevant IOM Units.
  2. Support the editing of the course content, including videos’ editing, audios/podcasts, pictures, case studies, handouts for participants.
  3. Assist in the first iteration of the course (6-week online event): advertisement, participants’ selection, launch and implementation – including support to live webinars, assignments’ review, interaction with participants and other remote support.
  4. Capture lessons learned and recommendations for future course’s iterations.
  5. Support the development of the 2024 campaign for the 16 Days of Activism against GBV with drafting of social media posts and CCCM advocacy messages.
  6. Assist in the development, translation and dissemination of tools and resources (guidance, case studies) related to the Protection of women and girls, children, and persons with disabilities, including through online webinars.
  7. Support in liaising with IOM’s field teams, Global CCCM Cluster partners, other interagency groups and IOM Departments and Divisions in Headquarters.
  8. Contribute to reporting exercises to donors and partners.
  9. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

  • The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities.
  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration.
  • The Intern will acquire technical knowledge in humanitarian action and coordination.
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Completed advance university degree from an accredited academic institution preferably in afield of study related to migration or other relevant social sciences; or,
  • Equivalent combination of a Bachelor’s degree and previous humanitarian work experience in relevant areas;
  • Only applications received within 12 months of their date of graduation will be accepted.

Experience

  • Experience in liaising with representatives from different organizations and coordination.

Skills

  • Strong interest and/or exposure to humanitarian affairs;
  • Sound knowledge of humanitarian principles, minimum standards, and humanitarian coordination structure;
  • Fluency in English and high quality drafting skills; and,
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, including strong command of MS Office software (MS Word, PowerPoint). Desktop publishing (Adobe Creative Suite, MS Publisher, InDesign or other publishing tool) and video editing experience (desirable).

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are at least 20 years old.

  • Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security clearances.
