Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place of study right in the heart of the city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Insurance & Risk Officer to join our small dynamic team within the Legal & Compliance Team. This new role will lead operational aspects of Insurance and manage the Risk and Business Continuity processes across the University. This unique role will work across the University to protect our staff, students, and assets, and to reduce the impact of incidents.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Day to day management of enquiries from internal and external stakeholders on insurance matters.
  • Provide technical advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Deliver a professional image to external stakeholders e.g Insurance Broker & Loss Adjuster.
  • Provide direct support to the Insurance Manager and Head of Business Continuity & Risk.
  • Support senior leadership teams in the development of their risk registers.
  • Maintain a risk-free community within the University.
  • Work with senior teams to develop their Business Continuity capability.
  • Support Business Continuity exercises.
  • Manage the day-to-day operational delivery to the University of a robust and professional service.
  • Point of contact for all Insurance-related matters both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Become a trusted advisor providing advice, support, and training to stakeholders on Insurance & Risk Management.
  • Data gathering and analysis for Insurance and Risk.
  • Develop and manage the efficiency and efficacy of insurance processes, including claims.
  • With guidance, write and present reports at the appropriate level.
  • Represent the University externally.
  • Support the Head of Business Continuity & Risk to develop Business Continuity Plans and Exercise Plans.
  • Actively support the Team during major Business Continuity incidents and losses.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum Cert CII.
  • Educated with a relevant degree.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Working in the Insurance Industry, with a clear understanding of terminology.
  • Experience of claims and underwriting.
  • Confident to respond to the majority of insurance-related queries essential.
  • Problem-solving, including the demonstration of a clear referral rationale and knowledge of what key information is required essential.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a virtual team essential
  • Able to influence by developing persuasive arguments.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Curious about getting to the kernel of an issue with the confidence to speak up where necessary.
  • Able to develop an MI suite to aid data analysis of insurance and risk trends.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of risk and be able to provide advice and training to promote a risk-aware culture, acting as a feedback mechanism to the business on lessons-learned.
  • Experience of implementing and managing frameworks and processes.
  • Excellent Microsoft skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, including developing procedures and templates.
  • Work with the Managers on the development of University policies, procedures, insurance tenders, identifying and resolving issues.
