Instructor of Teacher Education (educational psychology / special education)
The School of Education at the College of Charleston is seeking applicants for a full-time, nine-month Instructor of Teacher Education (educational psychology / special education) position in the Department of Teacher Education, beginning August 15, 2026. This is a teaching-focused, non-tenure-track appointment with primary responsibility for undergraduate and graduate instruction in educational psychology and related areas.
This position is essential to supporting the instructional mission of the Department of Teacher Education by providing consistent, high-quality instruction in foundational coursework required for all teacher education majors and minors. The successful candidate will contribute to student preparation for professional licensure and will support growing enrollments across multiple education programs.
Duties Include:
- Teaching a full instructional load of 12 credit hours per semester (typically four sections), with primary responsibility for:
- EDFS 303: Human Growth and Development
- EDFS 654: Human Growth and Development (Graduate Level)
- EDFS 401: Introduction to Special Education, as program needs require
- Designing and delivering high-quality instruction that supports preservice teacher development and preparation for certification examinations, including the Praxis II PLT
- Teaching across undergraduate and graduate levels, as assigned
- Maintaining consistent course design and instructional alignment across multiple sections
- Participating in departmental, programmatic, and School of Education meetings and service activities
- Supporting student recruitment and retention efforts within the Department of Teacher Education
- Collaborating with colleagues, particularly within the special education (SPED) team, to support programmatic needs and instructional coherence
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned master’s degree in education with specialization in educational psychology, special education, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching educational psychology or closely related coursework at the college or university level
- Ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate students
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Commitment to student-centered instruction and collaboration with colleagues
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and across varied program contexts
Preferred Qualifications:
- Teaching experience in special education
- Experience teaching large, multi-section foundational courses
- Experience teaching online courses (asynchronous and synchronous)
- Familiarity with teacher licensure requirements and certification exams (e.g., Praxis II PLT)
- Experience teaching across multiple modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, or online)
- Demonstrated versatility in teaching across related content areas rather than a single course specialization
