Head Coach Bison Women’s Hockey Program – Instructor I or II

Applications are invited for a full-time Head Coach Instructor I or II (one-year term). Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications/experience. Appointment will begin July 1, 2025, or soon thereafter and is renewable annually subject to favorable review.
Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Coach for the Bison Women’s Hockey program. The successful candidate will be expected to build on a rich tradition of excellence and a commitment to supporting the development of our student-athletes. The Head Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the program, including but not limited to player development, game preparation, recruitment, and budget management.
Responsibilities:
• Provide quality leadership and coaching expertise consistent with the operation of a successful inter-university sport program including:
o Planning and implementing practices and game strategies to maximize individual student-athletes, team performance and success
o Recruiting highly skilled and motivated student-athletes to join the program
o Managing team staff
o Collaborating with the Bison Integrated Support Team (BIST) to ensure well prepared healthy individuals physically and mentally.
o Supporting the academic pathways of student-athletes success
• Attend athletic conference meetings and ensuring compliance with all Canada West and U SPORTS regulations. Manage and oversee the program budget, ensuring efficient use of resources including:
o Establishing team fund raising targets to support program enhancements and the provision of athlete scholarships.
o Engaging with alumni as supporters/contributors to the program.
• Collaborate with other coaches, staff, and administrators to continuously improve the program
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with current players, alumni, and the hockey community
• Represent the program, the sport, and the university in a positive and professional manner locally, provincially, and nationally through activities such as public speaking appearances, and participation in clinics/camps
• Serve on faculty/university/athletic conference committees and undertake additional administrative duties, as assigned
• Teach/mentor students in academic programs of the faculty, as assigned
Qualifications:
Formal Education/Training and Experience:
• For an appointment at the Instructor I rank:
o a bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement though a master’s degree preferred.
o Candidates must have experience coaching in a high-performance women’s hockey program. Equivalent NCCP certification/international coaching certification will be considered
• For an appointment at the Instructor II rank:
o A Master’s degree is required or NCCP Competition Development Certification (previously Level III full NCCP certification) or equivalent is required.
o At least 5 years of successful performance coaching in a women’s hockey at a university or an equivalent high-performance environment
Proven Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of the Canadian University sport system
• Strong leaderships, organizational and communication skills
• Track record of recruiting successful athletes at a national level
• Commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, equity
• Ability to work within the university environment and a commitment to the total development of the student-athlete
• Track record of promoting a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
• Strong organizational and leadership skills
• Passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the ice
Faculty Information:
The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Ininew, Anisininew, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Red River Métis. FKRM offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE), Bachelor of Kinesiology (B.Kin and B.Kin (AT)), Bachelor of Recreation Management and Community Development (BRMCD), Master of Science and Master of Arts in Kinesiology & Recreation. It also has a Ph.D. program in Applied Health Sciences offered collaboratively with the College of Rehabilitation. Approximately 530 undergraduate and 60 graduate students are enrolled in the faculty. Faculty members have vibrant research programs funded by SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR and other agencies. Bison Sport and Recreation Services provide a broad range of programs to the University and Community, through intercollegiate sport, recreation services, Mini-U programs, and athletic therapy.
