Job Summary The College of Liberal Arts, School of History, Philosophy & Religion, invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.
The primary purpose of this position is to foster critical thinking and to advance each student’s knowledge and skills through the teaching of introductory and advanced courses in U.S. and World History. The incumbent is expected to provide an intellectual foundation for students concerning the history of gender, sex, and sexuality; food history (including history of e.g., beer/beer brewing & history of alcohol use and regulation more generally; local regional foods and culture, history of vegetarianism & related diets, etc.); history of sport; maritime history; or similar. The courses serve students in degree programs and provide enriching experiences for both majors and non-majors.

Key Responsibilities 90% Teaching:
Teach ten courses, each academic year, at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Develop curriculum for courses in U.S. and World History that are designed to engage and challenge students; may develop distance education course offerings.
10% Service:
Take part in service relating to SHPR, CLA, OSU and professional associations. Within SHPR, this may include tasks such as serving on promotion committees or peer reviews of teaching. This may also include presentations at OSU or in other local, national, and international venues, as well as research and publications.
What You Will Need
  • PhD in History or a closely related field.
  • Ability to teach a variety of introductory courses in History (including world history).
  • Ability to teach advanced classes in some area of 20th century U.S. history.
  • Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: history of gender, sex, and sexuality; food history (including history of e.g., beer / beer brewing & history of alcohol use and regulation more generally; local / regional foods and culture, history of vegetarianism & related diets, etc.); history of sport; maritime history; or similar.
