The CU Anschutz Center for COMBAT Research provides expert consultation for physicians, basic scientists, clinical investigators, professional research staff, and academic and military leaders. The Center focuses on creating and executing acute care research (e.g., trauma, brain injury, burn injury, critical care, emergency care, suicide, hemorrhagic shock, emergency care) to fulfill the needs of the U.S. military and our Colorado communities, including solutions for primary prevention and mental health promotion. The Center facilitates the execution of collaborative combat- and deployment-relevant research by fostering relationships among military scientists, clinical investigators, combat leaders, and field operators to produce successful innovations, materiel solutions, and knowledge products of high impact to the warfighter and the medics.

Nature of Work

The Scientific / Medical Writer in the CU Anschutz Center for Combat Medicine and BATtlefield (COMBAT) Research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine will play a crucial part in developing regulatory and technical documents and communicating the research occurring and planned in the Center with the scientific community. The Scientific / Medical Writer will guide Center faculty, staff, and trainees in the development of research documents, including grant proposals, regulatory documents, and scientific manuscripts, and will help to effectively convey the research and its importance to scientific audiences. The development process will include assisting faculty and Primary Investigators (PIs) with developing grant proposals, crafting and refining regulatory aspects, and responding to critiques from peer review. The writer will provide specialized support and consultation to prepare research grant proposals within the Center. In some instances, particularly for randomized controlled trials and multi-center studies, the writer will structure and write critical elements to convey the work performed with the support of the Center for COMBAT Research team.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Work with investigators associated with the Center for COMBAT Research to develop grant proposals and scientific manuscripts
  • Provide constructive feedback to investigators to improve clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of grant proposals
  • Advise investigators on best strategies to convey significance, impact, and innovation of their research plan
  • Work with investigators associated with the Center for COMBAT Research to develop, write, and revise regulatory and ethics sections of grant proposals, including human and animal research
  • Provide constructive feedback to investigators to improve clarity, logic, and appropriateness of Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols
  • Manage the development, submission, and renewal of all second level reviewed, Department of Defense Human Research Protections Office (HRPO) and Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO) protocols
  • Consult with investigators in responding to questions and requests for revisions to proposal documents, IRB, IACUC, HRPO, and ACURO protocol submissions
  • Ensure program/project compliance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory bodies
  • Provide expertise to Center for COMBAT Research associated projects requiring exception from informed consent (EFIC)
  • Assist investigators in the development of community outreach and engagement initiatives, to include effectively communicating relevant information while writing at an appropriate reading level
  • Assist in the development of protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Case Report Forms (CRFs)
  • Work with investigators to develop reports and effectively communicate status and findings to stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with investigators

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

Instructor:  $70,000 – $85,000

Sr. Instructor: $85,000-$110,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Instructor

  • Master’s degree in scientific field with 2+ years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing
    • A combination of education and related professional experience may be substituted for the master’s degree on a year for year basisOr
  • 3+ years professional experience working as a review officer for an IRB or HRPO office, or developing protocols for submission to IRB and HRPO offices

Senior Instructor

  • PhD in a scientific field with 1+ years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing
    • A combination of education and related professional experience may be substituted for the doctoral degree on a year for year basis

Or

  • 5+ years professional experience working as a review officer for an IRB or HRPO office, or developing protocols for submission to IRB and HRPO offices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reviewing protocols in an institution of higher education, large hospital, or contract research organization IRB office
  • Experience in developing regulatory protocols
  • Experience with Department of Defense HRPO and ACURO
  • Experience working as a scientific/medical writer

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to quickly acquire working knowledge regarding a variety of scientific/medical fields
  • Able to establish effective collaborations with faculty investigators in various disciplines
  • Able to meet deadlines
  • Able to organize multiple tasks with varying deadlines
  • Experience developing and submitting IRB and HRPO documents, and/or reviewing IRB and HRPO documents for approval
  • Experience assessing and conveying the impact of scientific work to a non-scientific audience
