The Department of Modern Languages has an opening for a full-time (.93 FTE) Instructor of Linguistics and Arabic.  The Department of Modern Languages consists of a collegial, multi-language faculty with strengths in teaching, research, and program development. We offer a minor in linguistics, as well as an M.A. in Spanish, a major in Spanish, and minors in three languages. This Instructor of Linguistics and Arabic position is a non-tenure track position, with the possibility of Clinical Teaching Track after initial appointment.

Position Emphasis:

The teaching load for this position will be 22 credit hours (73%). Primary teaching duties include courses in linguistics, including applied and sociolinguistics; additionally, the successful candidate must be able to teach language skills courses at all levels in Arabic, in both online and on-campus formats.  Service-related duties include coordination of our interdisciplinary linguistics minor and the Arabic language program. Evidence of excellence in teaching is required. 

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range has been established at $60,000 to $63,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics/Second Language Studies or closely related field.
  • Experience teaching linguistics courses and/or language skills courses in Arabic.
  • Experience implementing modern pedagogical approaches and supporting student success.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Experience with Study Abroad Programs.

Required Competencies:

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Ability to teach online and on-campus linguistics courses.
  • Ability to teach language skills courses in Arabic.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
