The Stollery Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is a 69-bed unit supporting the high-risk obstetrical unit at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women as well as a large geographical area serving outborn babies and their families. The NICU program embraces a philosophy of family centered care that aims to meet the unique needs of each baby and their family. The program consists of a multi-disciplinary team working collaboratively to provide high quality care with a commitment to ongoing quality improvement. centered care. The Clinical Education Support Nurse (CESN) reports to the NICU Manager for Advanced Practice to support nursing staff and education. The CESN works closely with the education team to support clinical skill and knowledge development of new staff essential for independent practice in the NICU. The CESN uses principles of adult learning to facilitate knowledge integration and support skill development throughout the orientation process. The CESN facilitates learning through seeking experiences and acts as a clinical mentor, resource and role model to new staff and preceptors. The CESN will liaise with preceptors to assist with various elements of their role (e.g., feedback, clinical teaching) The CESN functions as a resource and clinical champion in the NICU including championing patient safety and safe medication administration practices.

Description:

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years’ experience working at a high-risk delivery center and experience working with the micro preemie population. Previous experience as a preceptor of students/new staff. Ability to work independently and effectively in a multidisciplinary setting. Excellent collaboration, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills and abilities. Demonstrated leadership skills. Candidates must be highly motivated, self-directed and able to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with teaching in both classroom and clinical settings is an asset. Experience developing education materials for both staff and patients is an asset. Experience teaching and facilitating small and large groups is an asset. Experience with in-service and program development, implementation and evaluation is an asset.
