Job Summary

The Instructional Designer & Program Specialist participates as the training, education, and instructional design professional for EH&S. The individual selects technologies and tools, creates supportive learning activities and develops new safety and compliance training in response to the University’s needs. In collaboration with others, the incumbent creates multimedia content and produces according to an established schedule, providing updates via the EH&S website and to the relevant members of the campus community. The individual analyzes needs and develops recommendations to address a wide range of training issues and updates to relevant policies and regulations. The Instructional Designer & Program Specialist provides support for testing safety and compliance courses to ensure they are functional, designed for learning in mind, appropriately tailored for UCSF, and compliant with ADA and accessibility regulations and learning management systems. The Instructional Designer & Program Specialist uses technical expertise and a broad knowledge of relevant software design to develop & support the EH&S required trainings on the UCSF Learning Management System (LMS) site and maintains the EH&S website with relevant updates, links to trainings, and supporting resources and policy.

As the in-house communications expert, the Instructional Designer & Program Specialist promotes EH&S information and communications, provides technical expertise to implement senior management decisions, and oversees communications to effectively provide electronic and print communication for targeted safety information, outreach, marketing, and education to the larger campus community. The incumbent also manages and maintains the EH&S website and oversees special programs around trainings, reporting and policies.

Department Description

The EH&S Office provides technical support and services for UCSF campus and UCSF Health in the following specialties: hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, ergonomics, fire and life safety, radiation safety, chemical safety, biological safety, laboratory safety, shop and electrical safety, food & pool facility safety, and industrial hygiene.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 3+ years of related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong presentation skills
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of delivering training programs and assessment of training effectiveness
  • Thorough knowledge of current training programs and trends
  • Strong skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new training courses to meet organizational needs
  • Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems, i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and SmartSheet
  • Strong skills in planning, resourcing, and monitoring effective delivery of training
  • Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and education methodologies
  • Thorough knowledge of training and development, performance management and workplace learning
  • Ability to apply knowledge to achieve successful organizational outcomes
  • Working knowledge of E-learning design software (including Captivate or Articulate Storyline)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Environmental, Safety and Health Trainer (CET)
