Instructional Designer I

The position collaborates with dental faculty through all phases of course design and development to ensure that courses align with evidence-based pedagogy and integrate technologies to support active learning. The Instructional Designer I engages with design of hybrid & online courses in the Learning Management System, as well as with in-person active learning sessions (Simulation Labs, Team-based Learning, and Interprofessional Experiences) with a focus on the first two years of the dental curriculum.

Designs online, hybrid and active learning experiences for the College of Dentistry DMD Program through course planning and collaboration with faculty subject matter experts.

• Demonstrates current knowledge of pedagogical best practices for online education. Informs faculty and staff of standards and guidelines (e.g., quality and accessibility standards) and communicates best practices for teaching and learning.
• Coaches faculty in the creation of course goals, learning objectives, and an overall course map that aligns to planned assessments. Possesses excellent comprehension of Cognitive, Constructivist, and Behaviorist approaches to learning and can explain learning theories to faculty and staff throughout the instructional design process. Uses instructional design principles (Bloom’s Taxonomy, Adult Learning Theory, Mayer’s Multimedia Design Principles, Cognitive Load Theory, etc.).
• Provides analytical support for the design of modules, learning strategies, course policies, or software standards. Including reviewing technology and software programs for a course.
• Manages course planning projects and monitors, tracks, and communicates progress
• Participates in course planning processes including creating course layout mockups and content delivery demonstrations.
• Identifies deliverables, resources, and dependencies in course planning and works as a team to ensure deliverables will be met.

Actively engages in course production including the development of online, hybrid, and active learning sessions.

• Collaborates with subject matter experts to develop instructional content.
• Develops learning aids including instructional guides, handouts, interactive videos, and web modules.
• Creates basic graphic design elements in courses and course materials using DesignTools, Photoshop, etc. that adhere to UI and accessible design principles.
• Advises faculty on development of assessments that align with learning objectives.
• Updates course content including lectures, readings, assignments, and activities.
• Consults with faculty to integrate interactive educational technology tools (e.g. interactive video with quizzes, digital dentistry scans, branching scenarios of patient cases, etc.) into courses.
• Recommends solutions to instructional development problems.
• Provides effective feedback and coaching on writing, presentations, scripts, and storyboards through review of work and copyediting with clients. Demonstrates both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a critique.

Evaluates & assesses course quality and alignment of course outcomes with course learning goals. Promotes iterative improvement.

• Conducts needs assessments (via observation, surveys, interviews, document analysis) to understand student and faculty needs within the dental education context.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of course materials to ensure objectives are accomplished.
• Participates in student debriefings and reviews formative and summative student feedback to iteratively improve courses.
• Participates in quality review of courses (QM and UF+QM) as appropriate.
• Identifies procedures and implements checklists to ensure that courses are high quality and error-free. Evaluates and makes contributions to best practices.

Implements courses and provides support to faculty and students during the semester.

• Provides assistance to faculty and staff with Canvas and educational technology tools throughout the semester.
• Coordinates active learning course events (TBL, Clinic Learning Sessions, Workshops, Interprofessional Education, Special Event Days) during the semester. This may include managing breakout rooms in Zoom, attending a TBL session in person to manage logistics, setting up materials in a lab, etc.
• Presents training sessions on relevant pedagogy/andragogy, technology, or teaching strategies to faculty, staff, and students.

Actively Supports the Office of Academic Affairs, by cross training with other staff members for back up, and will perform other tasks as deemed necessary by supervisor. 

$45,600 – $47,000

• After an initial training period the candidate may become eligible for more flexible, hybrid work schedules including the possibility of a remote work day.

This allows employees to stagger arrival and departure times as necessary and to vary the number of workdays in the office so long as an employee’s FTE commitment is fulfilled within the university workweek. Master’s degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

• Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas), and educational technology tools (Articulate, Adobe Suite, Mediasite, Zoom, Cloud Collaboration Software, Polling Software, and Project Management Software)
• Competent in Microsoft Office Software, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams; Zoom, and experience with html/web pages preferred. Personal or Professional experience with Web editing.
• Experience with Teaching or workshop facilitation (Online and F2F)
