SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Instructional Designer works as a member of the CITS Instructional Development (ID) team and receives functional guidance from the Lead Instructional Designer. He/she works collaboratively with the Lead Instructional Designer, faculty and subject matter experts to provide course design, development, and support of face-to-face, hyflex, online and blended learning courses at UMass Dartmouth leveraging a broad portfolio of integrated instructional technologies. The Instructional Designer is responsible for providing expert consultation and assistance to UMass Dartmouth faculty in the design and delivery of high quality and effective courses and technology-mediated teaching and learning initiatives. The designer will develop and train faculty on teaching pedagogies, instructional strategies, course design and instructional technologies.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates closely with Lead Instructional Designer to provide pedagogical consultation and instructional design support to meet course design process deadlines and ensure online quality guidelines.
  • Works one-on-one with faculty to develop and provide recommendations for developing objectives, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and design of course materials and activities.
  • Incorporates the campus’s portfolio of instructional technologies into course design and provides related technical support, including, but not limited to lecture capture, online proctoring, web conferencing, and classroom technology.
  • Logs inquiries in the IT case management system and ensures resolution.
  • Advises faculty regarding accessibility criteria, assessment methods, and teaching strategies.
  • Works closely with the Lead Designer on the development and facilitation of instructional development training courses and workshops in different modalities related to topics such as teaching pedagogies, instructional strategies, or course design.
  • Conducts reviews as part of the University’s internal review process to ensure quality courses.
  • Assists with creating accessible instructional media, enforcing accessibility standards, and teaching faculty how to convert and produce accessible content, and responding to accommodation needs.
  • Develops customized course templates for online programs.
  • Evaluates emerging and evolving technologies that will improve or enhance web-based communications and online instructional effectiveness.
  • Develops documentation, training, and other instructional materials (websites, online tutorials) to support the use of technology in teaching & learning.
  • Serves as liaison to academic departments in support of online assessment and proctoring platforms.
  • Provides technical and developmental support for users of Blackboard Learning, the Learning Management System (LMS) and other technologies in support of teaching and learning.
  • Works proactively and cooperatively with team members, CITS teams, and other University departments to provide excellent customer service.
  • Attends user’s group meetings, seminars, and conferences, to maintain state of the art knowledge of emerging technologies, learning management systems, mobile technologies, and online instructional design practices and strategies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, education, information technology, communication, or related field OR Bachelor’s degree with Instructional Design Certificate

EXPERIENCE:

Demonstrated experience (over three years) designing online college-level courses; demonstrated experience with Blackboard or other comparable course management system.  Experience in higher education.

OTHER

Available on nights and weekends as needed.  Travel may be required for campus business and conferences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or related field Experience teaching, preferably at the college or university level
  • Experience teaching in online learning environments
