Saint Mary’s University Sobey School of Business is currently looking to fill a Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor Indigenous scholar position to join our Department of Management.

The Department of Management at the Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University (SMU), on the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, invites applications from Indigenous scholars for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a start date on or before June 1, 2027. This position is a targeted hire for an Indigenous scholar under the Saint Mary’s University Faculty Union Collective Agreement as part of SMU’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and is open only to qualified scholars who identify as First Nations, Inuit, Métis, or an Indigenous person from another global context. Given the location of Saint Mary’s on the traditional land of the Mi’kmaq, applications from Mi’kmaw people are particularly encouraged. Applicants are required to document their Indigenous identity in their application and should be aware that the University will verify the community connections of applicants.

Job Information and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will clearly demonstrate strong skills and/or experience within a management discipline (such as cooperative management, sustainability, responsible leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation, organizational behavior, strategy, business ethics, industrial relations, and human resource management). Central to the Department’s work is a commitment to the United Nation’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and so candidates whose research and teaching are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are preferred.

Position duties involve teaching at the undergraduate (and potentially graduate) level, mentoring and supervising students, conducting research, and service to the department, University, and community, including building department capacity in areas such as community-engaged relationship building, curriculum revision, and program promotion and recruitment. The Department of Management is committed to equity and diversity as essential to academic excellence. This is a targeted search for candidates as outlined above, with relevant demonstrated lived experience and expertise.

While is not a requirement for appointment explicitly focusing on Indigenous research and teaching, we particularly encourage applications from candidates with focus on Indigenous research and teaching related to indigenous aspects of management. We acknowledge the potential impact of various life circumstances (e.g., illness, disability, caregiving, family commitments) on a candidate’s record of research and other achievements. Candidates are encouraged to describe such circumstances and their impact on their application. This information will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.

Experience and Education Requirements

The successful candidate must have:
• A demonstrated record of effective teaching and advanced research capability, as confirmed either by: (a) holding a Doctoral Degree, or is near completion in a relevant field (if ABD, with clear documentation of expected completion date); or (b) providing evidence of equivalent contributions of Indigenous research and knowledge, knowledge-building and knowledge-sharing through life experience, practical research experience, traditional knowledge, or other approaches.
• A promising university teaching agenda in a management discipline, as outlined above, with an ability to bring an Indigenous worldview to teaching curriculum.
• A promising research agenda in a management discipline, as outlined above.
• Ability to strengthen partnerships with local Indigenous communities.

• An up-to-date curriculum vitae indicating teaching experience, research experience, knowledge dissemination, and community engagement.
• A teaching dossier that includes a statement of teaching philosophy and teaching experience.
• A future research agenda.
• One to three relevant examples of recent scholarly writing, community research, reports, etc.
• Copy of graduate school transcripts and evidence of course work relevant to the position (if applicable).
• Names and contact information of three referees.
