Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy in Israel is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and has an exciting opportunity for a Political Adviser.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a high-profile and fast-moving policy area, developing expertise on one of the most complex and closely watched issues in the region. Working across political analysis, stakeholder engagement and policy support, the successful candidate will build a strong network of contacts, deliver insightful reporting on complex developments, and play an important role in helping the Embassy understand and respond to rapidly evolving political, legal and human rights issues.
Working with the wider Political Section, the role will provide analysis and reporting, and on Israel’s policy towards and actions in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Political Analysis and Reporting
- Monitor, analyse, and report on developments related to: Israeli political trends relevant to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
- Produce high-quality written reporting (daily/weekly updates, briefing notes, policy submissions) for London and senior Embassy staff.
- Assess implications for the Middle East Peace Process and UK policy objectives.
2. Stakeholder Engagement and Network Building
- Build and maintain a strong network of contacts across: the Government of Israel; Israeli civil society and human rights organisations; figures relevant to Israel’s approach to the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.
3. Policy Support and Advisory
- Provide timely advice to the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission, and Political Section on: sensitive developments relating to occupation and human rights; emerging risks (security, political escalation, legal issues); the settler community and developments; opportunities for influence.
- Contribute to UK policy formulation through drafting updates and speaking notes, and supporting visits and briefings.
- Ensure alignment with broader UK positions on international law and the two-state solution.
4. Coordination and Cross-Embassy Working
- Work closely with: British Consulate General Jerusalem, policy teams in London, comms colleagues.
5. Programme and Project Support
- Support design and oversight of our work on the International Peace Fund and wider support to Civil Society organisations in Israel focused on the Palestinian issue.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Essential
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral in English and Hebrew, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely.
- Proven experience analysing and reporting on complex political or conflict-related environments
- Experience producing high-quality, concise written briefings for decision-makers
- Track record of building and maintaining networks across actors such as government, civil society, or international partners
- Sound judgement handling sensitive, politically charged information
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Demonstrable expertise on the Israel-Palestinian issue, including occupation structures, human rights issues, and political-military dynamics.
- Strong understanding of Israeli politics, particularly the settler movement and its influence.
- Knowledge of religious Zionism, including key actors, ideology, and institutional influence.
- Experience working on international law and/or human rights issues in a policy or operational setting.
- Familiarity with UK government policy processes or similar international policy environments.
- Arabic language skills

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:
- Receive the appropriate level of security clearance; and
- Are able to work legally in Israel.
Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable salary of ILS 15,300 per month plus transport allowance and social benefits as required by the law.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Parking facilities are not provided nor paid for by the Embassy.
This position is for a full-time employment, on fixed-term contract of ten (10) months from mid-October 2026 maternity leave, with a possible extension, subject to a 3-month probationary period.
Working hours is 37.5 per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00-16:00 and Friday 8:00-13:30. This is a hybrid position with a minimum of two days a week in the office. The position may require occasional travel in country.
Any flexible working patterns may be considered based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
