Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP), Human Resources, Office of the Executive Vice President, the Human Resources Generalist provides a broad range of both strategic and tactical support for Human Capital functions in the Arts & Sciences (A&S) and acts as partner to 28 A&S departments, and over 40 institutes, centers and program that comprise the Arts & Sciences. Responsibilities
- The incumbent works closely with the AVP, HR to implement human resources initiatives and programs that focus on the employee lifecycle including talent acquisition, on-boarding, training, career pathing, employee and labor relations and off-boarding.
- The HR Generalist advises and provides assistance to hiring managers regarding the administrative recruitment process, including the use of Columbia’s recruiting system TalentLink. The HR Generalist reviews, writes and approves job requisitions and provides consultation on staffing structures and roles. The HR Generalist manages the hiring review process; ensuring appropriate and timely communication of hiring decisions to Schools/Departments/HR Business Partners. The HR Generalist coaches, advises and trains managers on hiring techniques, new hire orientations, team building and other people-focused initiatives.
- The incumbent reviews and approves transactions at as 1st level in the People at Columbia (PAC) systems. The incumbent manages the casual hiring process, tracking temporary positions and advises managers on assessing performance during probation and assists with advising departments on the University’s temporary hiring policies and procedures.
- Working with the AVP, HR, the HR Generalist provides guidance and recommendations on organizational design and structures that meet the changing needs of the departments, centers, institutes and programs within A&S. The HR Generalist designs and implements change management programs and works closely with managers and employees to help them navigate and adapt to new processes and procedures.
- The incumbent assists in managing employee relations and labor relations issues. Works with managers to create strategies and plans that address and resolve employee relations issues while ensuring consistency with CU policies and procedures. The incumbent also provides expertise and advice to managers and staff on general HR practices and policies including performance management, progressive discipline, bargaining agreement work rules, and grievance procedures. The incumbent represents A&S in labor relations meetings.
- HR Generalist builds relationships with A&S administrators at all levels and acts as a coach and mentor to proactively engage local HR to develop networks and forums to share information that can be leveraged across A&S. The incumbent creates communication plans to keep local HR partners informed of new updates to HR policies and/or procedures.
- Performs special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. 2 years of related experience.
Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. Must be organized and detail and task oriented with the ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time sensitive manner.
- Ability to work under pressure and without supervision and good independent judgment is a must. Must be able to keep confidential information.
- Have ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration in dealing with individuals at all levels.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills necessary.
- Excellent computer skills including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, including knowledge of databases and advanced spreadsheet skills. Must be able to quickly acquire and apply knowledge of University policies, procedures, and systems.
