About the Department
 

The academic departments of the Division of the Humanities have set an international standard for humanistic inquiry. Widely known for their interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and exchange of ideas, the Division’s faculty consistently produces pioneering research that gives us the tools to articulate deep truths about ourselves. The Division of the Humanities comprises 19 degree programs across 16 departments and committees, with approximately 800 students from around the world enrolled in our PhD, MFA, and MA programs. The Human Resources and Payroll Office of the Division collaborates with the Division’s units to attract, develop, reward and engage diverse talent to meet their specific goals and those of the University overall. We support the goals of the Division through effective and conscientious management of human resources and payroll resources.

The Division of the Humanities seeks an individual who has a strong desire to work in an academic setting with a diverse group of people from varying domestic and worldwide cultures in support of human resources and payroll matters. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources and with additional oversight from the Director of Academic Affairs, and collaborating with the offices of Budget, Financial and Grant Services, and Central HR, the HR Generalist, manages human resources and payroll administration for approximately 500 employees which includes faculty, other academics, staff, students, and temporary personnel; complies with divisional and University guidelines and policies; has a lot of autonomy and decision-making authority, manages many diverse HR and payroll functions which require a strategic mindset, extensive confidentiality, excellent judgment, and extreme attention to detail. All work is performed with a commitment to efficiency, accuracy, customer service, and compliance.
This position is eligible for hybrid remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced, confidential, and diversified human resources and payroll functions.
  • Manages the hiring process for staff personnel which may include guiding managers on recruitment strategies; manages all HRIS on-boarding functions; maintains all records for staff searches; refers additional staff requests to Sr. Director for review and approval.
  • Manages recruitment, on-boarding, and all hiring needs for student employees; troubleshoots timekeeping matters.
  • Manages all on-boarding needs for faculty and other academic personnel including managing visa, housing allowances, or other matters; manages faculty summer salaries and all faculty payroll inputs.
  • Ensures payroll is accurate and allocated appropriately for all personnel; conducts data analysis to adhere to divisional compliance.
  • Assists with the annual merit process for all personnel; manages Leaves for staff personnel.
  • Develops and executes programming and presentations for training on various HR or payroll items.
  • Keeps listservs, directories, wiki pages, and other data current.
  • Keeping within University and divisional policy, thinks strategically and partners with colleagues about how to implement improvements to rules and guidelines, including data collection and maintenance.
  • Supports staff hiring processes, including developing job descriptions, interviewing and reference checking, handling employment offers, and conducting orientation. Drafts templates and routine offer letters. Maintains appropriate human resources data and records, solving a range of straightforward problems using standard procedures.
  • Assists in the development and administration of the HR budget for the department, monitors for variances, and manages employment expenses within established guidelines.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • Two years progressively responsible administrative experience.
  • Experience making presentations or similar.
  • Experience with Workday HRIS or other.
  • Experience with MS Teams, calendaring.
  • Experience working in a higher education support capacity, particularly with faculty and students.
  • Experience training others.
  • Experience using a database program to develop a tracking system.

Certifications:

  • Human Resources HRCI or SHRM certification.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and a capacity to learn new database/reporting software.
