About us:

University Family Housing is comprised of a unique stock of 83 century homes and two 21 story residential towers. We provide housing to student families, faculty families and long-term residential tenancies, on-site property management services, and educational and recreational programming for our families.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, University Family Housing, the Communication & Education (HLC-CE) coordinates and monitors student life at University Family Housing. The HLC-CE is responsible for developing and sustaining a supportive, inclusive and accepting living community for all students at University Family Housing. The position also trains and supervises the Residence Advisors throughout the year.

The HLC-CE promotes community development, academic success and the personal growth of individual residents through program implementation, policy development, residential advocacy and daily involvement with students and their families. In addition, the position will liaise with members of student affairs, student leaders and staff throughout the University to facilitate the operational and maintenance systems necessary to implement these programs.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to enquiries and advising students on the interpretation of rules and regulations and providing basic support and general referrals and resources
  • Advising students on personal and academic issues by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
  • Analyzing processes and recommending and/or implementing changes for more efficient coordination of operations, process improvements and program/service activities
  • Liaising with internal contacts to ensure consistent administration of embedded student support services
  • Keeping well-informed on University programs, policies, procedures, and emergency protocols as well as industry best practices and trends
  • Coordinating staff recruitment activities with contacts
  • Directing the activities of casual staff and coaching student staff on handling personal and non-personal complaints
  • Gathering information in preparation for budget planning

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of relevant residence life/housing experience
  • Experience working in a university residence setting, either in a similar position or as a senior residence don. Must have experience in counseling, programming and discipline in a residence community.
  • Excellentoral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
  • Skilled in working in an unpredictable and often stressful environment both independently and as part of a team of diverse individuals.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience working with university-aged adults and individuals in crisis
  • Experience working with post-secondary students
  • Knowledge of university and community resources

USW Pay Band 09 — $65,407 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,646. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
