The University’s Catering Services provides a diverse range of services to customers, including hospitality catering, vending, cafés, restaurants, meeting rooms and banqueting which are located throughout the University.
This role is primarily concerned with the service of food and drink to Cardiff University’s Hospitality and Events service, being in constant contact with customers and hospitality staff.  Responsible for delivering excellent customer service at all times whilst working as part of the wider Hospitality team to help deliver successful events.

Starting Salary: £10.72 per hour (£19,578 – £ 20,761) 35 and 20 hour open ended contracts available.

Package includes 32 days holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays, as well as access to a range of staff discounts and opportunities for development with access to accredited training.

Please note this role requires you to be based on campus.

The post will involve regular attendance outside normal working hours (evenings, weekends).

Job Description

Main Duties

  • Prepare, deliver and set up all requirements for Cardiff University Hospitality and Event catering in line with the standard operating procedures and daily function sheets.  This will include the preparation and service of formal lunches, buffets and refreshment services; in line with departmental standards and will include all food and drink services.
  • Deal directly with a wide range of customers, including students, staff, visitors, and VIPs, providing a courteous, efficient and a high level of customer service.  Using initiative to provide solutions when appropriate or escalating to the manager.
  • Monitor portion control and ensure knowledgeable on allergen information for each service.  Ensuring compliance with food safety legislation, including Natasha’s Law.
  • Prepare the equipment and buffet crates, paying particular attention to matching booking sheet to equipment and food/drink required, ensuring accurate allergen labels are included and match the menu details on booking sheet, stock rotation, ensuring standards and stock levels are always maintained.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of all equipment, kitchens, vehicles and service areas, in line with cleaning schedules and food safety policy.  This will include all associated equipment and loading bay areas.
  • Preparation of food and beverages in accordance with standard operation procedures.  This includes set up of catering areas, serving and clearing tables.  Raising daily orders as required, checking and signing for deliveries from suppliers.
  • Work at cash bars.  Cash handling, to ensure the safe keeping of cash floats and operating the cash register throughout the service.  Ensuring all processes are adhered to in line with cash handling Policy and Procedures and Licensing Legislation.
  • To work in any area of Cardiff University Hospitality and Events according to the demands of the business.

  • The role will require a flexible approach to working hours and is 5 days out of 7 (pro rata for part time staff).

  • Recent previous experience working in Event and Hospitality environment.
  • Proven experience of good timekeeping and ability to work tight deadlines and use initiative.
  • A good understanding of customer service and experience of delivering exemplary standards and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders in-person, email and phone.
  • Evidence previous experience in a reasonably wide variety of catering establishments, in order to understand the requirements of the diverse customer requirements and experiences of the University.
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment with an ability to respond to customer needs, adapting to their requirements accordingly.
  • You will be able to work without close supervision and have strong organisational skills.
  • You will have experience of working within a team and ability to communicate and follow instruction and procedures.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills and evidence of ability to use email and internet-based applications.
  • Level 2 Food Safety or equivalent or willingness to undertake and maintain accreditation.
  • DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • A valid, full, Group B driving license.
  • Evidence ability to make effective judgements.
  • Experience of stock control and purchasing from suppliers.
  • Experience in product placement and merchandising.
  • You will be calm and be able to undertake multiple tasks and have good timekeeping.
  • Ability to speak/understand Welsh or willingness to learn.

    CAMPUS SERVICES INFORMATION

    Campus Services provides a range of professional support services to students, staff and visitors at Cardiff University.
    Residences manages accommodation places for approximately 5,500 students, both catered and self-catered.

    In terms of catering, there are cafés and restaurants conveniently located across university campuses, in addition to a delivered hospitality service.
    Cardiff University Sport exists to provide students and staff with a balanced, high quality and integrated sport service which meets the needs of a broad range of users.

    The Nursery offers facilities for children aged between 10 weeks and 5 years and is divided into sections appropriate to the ages and development of the children.
    Both residential and catering facilities are utilised for conferences and functions during the University’s vacation periods.  A purpose built and designed conference centre and conference facility is also available throughout the year.
    The Campus Services operation is supported by its own central administration functions covering the allocation of residences, human resource and quality, purchasing, facilities, finance, and general administration.
