Health Tissue Monitoring using Portable Sensors

University of Birmingham

About the Project

We are looking for an exceptionally motivated individual to undertake a PhD project (open to both UK and international students) at the University of Birmingham. Considering the growing aging population, utilising innovative technologies for diagnostic purposes plays a crucial role which makes Diagnostic tissue monitoring a key strategic direction in the healthcare.

This PhD project focuses on the development of remote sensing technology using portable and smart sensors for non-contact patient monitoring. The advanced remote sensing technology developed during this project enables real-time diagnosis, providing critical information during surgeries to ensure diseased tissue is effectively removed and offering insights into cellular health. The underlying principle of this technology is based on detecting change in the electrical properties of a tissue in various state, due to moisture level (ML) and chemical composition variation which provide quantitative diagnostic information about the tissue pathology. These changes could be remotely measured by means of electromagnetic wave (EMW) propagation and scattering from the tissue. The final stage of the research will focus on utilizing machine learning advancements to enhance detection and classification capabilities. This is an innovative approach in tissue health monitoring expected to revolutionize the field.

Applicant Requirements

We welcome applications from students who hold or expect to achieve a first-class degree in electronic engineering, computer science or related fields. The ideal candidate should have experience with signal processing, machine learning, with proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and strong communication skills.

What we Offer

You will engage in a dynamic and supportive research environment, collaborating closely with leading experts and academics at the University of Birmingham. This position provides access to state-of-the-art research facilities and offers extensive opportunities for international and industry partnerships.
