About the Department
ECHO-Chicago (Extension for Community Health Outcomes) is the longest-running urban ECHO program in the world. It leverages existing assets by bringing together community health centers (CHCs) and academic medical centers for collaborative, curriculum-based, iterative, case-based learning. As a result, providers are able to integrate evidence-based practice into care and patients are able to receive state-of-the-art care in their primary medical home.
Job Summary
The Manager of Research for ECHO-Chicago will take a leadership role in all program evaluation and quality improvement activities. The successful candidate will provide oversight of the development and enhancement of research designs and protocols, study documentation, data collection and management processes, and data analysis. Program evaluation and quality improvement projects will involve collection of process and outcome measures and analysis of the ECHO sessions as well as assessment of the impact of the ECHO-Chicago program at multiple levels, including provider-level changes (e.g. self-efficacy, implemented practice changes), patient- level outcomes (e.g. disease-specific health outcomes), and health system-level impacts (e.g. service utilization, cost savings). To successfully perform the role, the Manager of Research should understand study design and statistical analysis, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the causes of clinical trends and anomalies in disease management and wellness programs, and the evaluation of the financial impact of programs.
Must have the ability to translate program goals and objectives into testable hypotheses and to work with collaborators and clinics to design research protocols based on available resources. Contribute to and lead research dissemination activities, including developing abstracts for presentations at national meetings and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed literature. Position requires the ability to articulate research findings to internal and external audiences in both oral and written formats. The Manager of Research is expected to serve as part of the ECHO-Chicago leadership team, leveraging their expertise and experience to contribute to overall program strategy, staff development, and quality improvement. Work with the Director and Executive Director and leadership team to develop proposals for funding opportunities. Provide research and evaluation support for other programs as determined by section leadership.
This position will be eligible for an alternative work arrangement.
This position is partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.
Responsibilities
Designs and performs statistical analyses, and then be able to explain this analysis to a non- technical audience of both internal and external customers including senior management.
Develops knowledge and expert understanding of all ECHO-Chicago program initiatives to facilitate analysis.
Executes analytic plans for program evaluation, feasibility studies, outcomes analysis and research studies as needed, including the creation of testable hypotheses.
Manages communication and expectations with clinical program team and other key stakeholders.
Serves as expert consultant on outcomes to program leadership during program design and planning to ensure rigor and feasibility of evaluation of outcomes.
Works with ECHO-Chicago leadership team (and other programs as assigned) to scope out strategic projects, develops evaluation plans and leads a team to execute and deliver on those plans.
Solves complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
Guides data collection, evaluation and analysis. Designs and manages databases. Writes reports, articles and manuscripts.
Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
MA/MS in health policy, health services research, public health, epidemiology.
Experience:
Experience in a quantitative or qualitative healthcare-related job function.
Experience directly interfacing with clinical providers (e.g., physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals) in a research context.
Experience in contributing to the development of grant proposals.
Academic medical center experience.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Advanced-level experience using SAS or R to conduct analysis or similar programming tool such as SPSS, STATA or Statistica, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and REDCap.
Preferred Competencies
Demonstrated application of problem-solving skills in the creation and interpretation of quantitative analyses and in the development of evaluation plans.
Demonstrated expertise in program evaluation and design methods in healthcare.
Demonstrated ability to independently apply multiple advanced quantitative analytics, business modeling, and intermediate statistical analysis methods.
Familiarity with qualitative research projects.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work independently to write articles, reports and manuscripts, and present research findings at meetings and/or conferences.
Strong management skills of scientific research projects and/or scientific research facilities.
Considerable on-the-job experience ensuring compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies.
Working Conditions
Requires some domestic travel.
