Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR) is seeking a Research Specialist to join our rapidly growing program. WiSOR is an interdisciplinary, multi-investigator research program that supports a wide variety of outcomes-focused research, including health care disparities, comparative effectiveness research, patterns of care, and performance and safety in surgical care.
The immediate program needs for this position involve project management and research support for funded and unfunded studies led by Syed Nabeel Zafar, MD, a surgical oncologist and a health services researcher. Research projects involve using a data-science approach to study outcomes after cancer surgery and include global surgery projects which include research capacity building, registry building, and improving surgical outcomes and cancer care in low- and middle-income countries. Candidates will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks that span the full lifespan of a research study, protocol development, IRB submissions, administrative work, recruitment, communicating with study sites and researchers, data collection, compliance, project management, data management, analysis, writing and presenting findings. A successful candidate will be a self-motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented problem solver who is both able to work independently and contribute to team science. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to the discipline of surgery or cancer or both and experience with medical research.

Responsibilities: Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 25% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 25% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • 5% Assists with the development, implementation, and maintenance of study protocols and associated documents, including participant-facing materials; maintains knowledge of specific study and regulatory guidelines to help ensure compliance
  • 5% Assists with the development and communication of study task lists and timelines, in consultation with PI and senior research staff
  • 10% Provides administrative support to study team, including scheduling meetings, taking minutes, and organizing meeting materials.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:
– 1-2 years of professional or volunteer experience in medical research administration/administrative assistance, communications, project management, community/nonprofit work, or related area
Preferred qualifications:
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
– Reference manager software experience
– Statistical software experience
– Experience with research, writing, and editing
– Prior medical experience
– Prior experience with medical research demonstrating skills such as data management, data analysis, literature search, manuscript writing, presentations.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% – 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $43,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $43,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits. Additional Information:

The department will not be able to support a request for a J-1 waiver. If you chose to pursue a waiver and apply for our position, neither the UW nor UWMF will reimburse you for your legal or waiver fees.
The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. University sponsorship is not available for this position.
This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.
Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/ ). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
