Environmental Health and Safety, is a department of the Office of Safety and Security within the Division of Operations. The Health Physicist, under the direction of University Radiation Safety Officer/Designee, is responsible for supporting all radiation safety activities and provides training to all users of radioactive materials, radiation producing devices, and lasers that are covered under the State license and registration. Responsible for providing technical assistance in areas and locations at Nuclear Engineering and Science Center and other engineering facilities where radioactive materials, radiation devices and lasers are used under the Texas A&M University license and registration. Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Radiological Health, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Science, Radiological Science, or related science/engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Four years of related laboratory experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
• Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
• Knowledge of Texas Department of State Health Services and Radiation Control Program rules
• Knowledge of use of portable radiation survey instrumentation and other appropriate safety equipment
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

Required Licenses and Certifications:

• Must have a State of Texas class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• An advanced degree in health physics or nuclear engineering, or currently enrolled in a graduate program in a related field
• Two or more years of professional experience in a university radiological safety program having a broad scope license
• Experience working in a laboratory

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Familiar knowledge of and ability to use radiation survey instrumentation
• Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

• American Board of health Physics (ABHP) certification
• Registered Professional Engineer (PE), Board of Laser Safety Certification or other safety related certifications

Responsibilities:

• Technical Support – Provides radiation safety support and overview of all activities at the Nuclear Engineering and Science Center (NESC), and other engineering facilities that are only covered under the Texas State license. Reviews experimental protocols, project safety analysis, and evaluates radiation fields and shielding pertinent to the experiments. Ensures that doses to facility personnel from the experiments are ALARA. Performs contamination surveys/radiation surveys, leak tests of sealed sources, inventory of radioactive materials and facilitate instrument calibrations. Drafts and reviews technical documents and perform health physics calculations. Performs radiation safety functions such as classification, segregation, collection, packaging shipment and disposal of radioactive wastes. Verifies compliance in laboratories and responds to radiological emergencies. Works with various sources of radiation, both ionizing and non-ionizing. Responds to complex and non-complex questions form permit holders that would require advanced expertise and a broad understanding of radiological programs. Provides radiation safety assistance to main campus laboratories as well as other remote sites including transportation of radioactive material and removing excess material. May act as lead person or technical advisor on small to medium projects related to radiation protection at NESC.

• Inspections and Compliance – Performs laboratory compliance reviews and follow-up visits at on- and off-campus sites. Travels to off campus site locations via a University or other motor vehicle. Assists the University Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) and other senior staff with licenses and registrations. Provides technical input and assistance with inspections on radiation producing devices and lasers.

• Training and Reports – Conducts general radiation safety training to experimenters and students at NESC and assists with other special training, if required, to maintain regulatory compliance. Drafts, revises, and updates training modules. Assists Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) with the annual report and other technical documents and participate in radiological safety committee. Performs other duties as assigned.
