Primary Purpose of Position The primary purpose of this position is to implement and analyze health and safety programs; conduct health and safety hazard assessments; compliance inspections; investigations; audits; respond to health and safety campus emergencies; training; and collaborate with campus stakeholders to ensure the health and safety of the campus community.
Minimum Education/Experience Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; and six years of progressive experience needed to perform the work required including two years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Essential Job Duties
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and implement Asbestos, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Hearing Conservation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Electrical Safety, Lock Out Tag Out and Confined Space programs.
  • Develop and implement workplace hazard assessments to identify hazards, analyze risk, and implement exposure controls.
  • Design and conduct field investigations to address specific health and safety hazards such as high noise, confined spaces, respiratory protection, and other physical hazards.
  • Respond to reports of indoor air quality, mold, ventilation, heat stress and other health hazards.
  • Perform air and other environmental monitoring to determine employee exposures.
  • Write field assessment, inspection, investigation, sampling, and monitoring reports.
  • Develop and update training programs.
  • Gather data, analyze and develop trend analysis reports.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Asbestos Inspector and Management Planner North Carolina accreditation.
  • Advanced degree in the life sciences, engineering, business or related field.
  • Relevant certifications (i.e. ASP, CSP, CIH)
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of asbestos, construction, ventilation systems and electrical safety.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in higher education, health care, or the public sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting safety compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience with calibrating industrial hygiene equipment and new technology systems.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure.
