Gym Coach

This is a hugely exciting time to be joining the King’s Sport and Wellness team at King’s College London as we look to begin the next stage of our delivery from 2022-2025,
to connect with our community to find their personal best.  The post holder will contribute to the department’s mission to deliver unique sport and wellness experiences that unite our community and optimise our people and potential. 

This purpose of this role is to support the department in achieving the King’s Sport Ambition to connect with our communities to find their personal best, set with the Head of Sport, in doing so achieving the Mission of the E&F Philosophy and Community Business Service Functional Plan to; ‘deliver trusted, responsive and reliable services that enable the King’s community to make the world a better place.’  

To support the King’s Sport & Wellness team in the co-creation of inclusive and socially sustainable community services, operating world class facilities across healthy campuses, that are affordable and accessible – all enabled by a One King’s team ethos. 

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a full time post.

•       To write, implement and review inductions and personal fitness plans in line with the King’s Sport & Wellness Gym Experience to actively coach on a broad and holistic range of health, fitness and wellbeing aspects when staffing the gym floor.  

•       To conduct, write, implement, and review programmes in line with the Active Wellness Scheme delivered across King’s Sport & Wellness. 

•       To deliver a comprehensive range of fitness workshops, events and group exercise classes that ensures that our members are engaged and educated in fitness and their physical wellbeing. 

•       To teach respective classes on a regular basis in our fitness studio’s and communicate with the Operations Supervisor on member’s feedback, adhere to the description of the class and modify the intensity for participants when necessary.  

•       To monitor and coach gym members to ensure their safety and that they use correct techniques when exercising therefore providing a high quality member experience.  

•       To assist in the development of a series of events that brings university community together through the year across the university campuses and in the Centre.  

•       To support the King’s Sport & Wellness Management Team to continually maintain and exceed operational performance of the gyms, drawing recommendations and implementing actions from the results. 

•       To assist in the operational systems and processes of managing Health and Fitness memberships and services and report all PDQ income accurately. 

•       To have a working knowledge of the Normal Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plans and an understanding of Health and Safety Legislation.   

•       Ensure all operating policies are adhered to whilst in the gyms – being responsible for the opening and closing procedures and ensuring all equipment and the building operates within Health & Safety guidelines as required. 

•       To achieve and maintain a high level of cleaning and maintenance in accordance with King’s Sport & Wellness high standards, responsible for cleaning gym equipment and the gym area.   

•       Ensure all fitness equipment maintenance is carried out, reported, and monitored in accordance with the operating policies.   

•       To support the King’s Sport & Wellness Management Team in ensuring all casual staff adhere to all operating policies and procedures. 

•       To develop positive working relationships with the high-performing team of Gym Coaches, King’s Sport & Wellness staff, and other student service providers within the University to enhance students’ experience.     

•       To attend and contribute to Team meetings to engage in the review of procedures and development of working practices within King’s Sport & Wellness.  

•       To assist in the promotion of King’s Sport & Wellness and to endorse the brand identity and values of the department.   

•       To implement the Estates and Facilities Fit for King’s values and high standards of customer care to ensure a World Class Service for a World Class University.  

•       Commitment to attending internal and external CPD programmes as part of the Gym Coach team, keeping up to date with new techniques and trends and gaining additional qualifications where necessary to enhance the quality of services to members. 

•       Any further duties, which may reasonably be required by King’s Sport & Wellness Management. 

•       Knowledge of fitness facility procedures. 

•       Knowledge of the importance of physical fitness to individual health and wellbeing.  

•       Excellent communication skill across a variety of customer groups and ability to forge good relationships with a variety of departments or user groups.  

•       Experience of working with the needs of a broad range of gym members to ensure an  inclusive environment.  

•       A strong grasp of information technology and Microsoft office skills including word and excel.  

•       Knowledge and experience and working in a higher education environment and an understanding of the needs of students.  

•       Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety regulations.  

•       Ability to manage own time and work independently or as part of a team.

Essential criteria  

1.       A good level of education (A-level or equivalent). 

2.       Level 2 Fitness Instructor or above on REPS/CIMSPA. 

3.       Commitment to continued professional development. 

4.       Experience teaching group exercise classes. 

5.       Experience working within the health and fitness industry. 

6.       Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft suite and other IT programs. 

7.       Experience working with a broad range of users.  

8.       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal). 

9.       Ability to work early and late shifts, weekends, and to work flexibly across sites as needed. 

10.   Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety regulations. 

Desirable criteria

1.       First Aid qualified 

2.       Additional group exercise qualifications: group cycle/spin and boxing/boxfit. 

3.       A degree in Sport & Exercise Science (or equivalent).
