Job Summary

The position is part of the FMS Grounds Department, and maintains and enhances the aesthetic beauty of the 1200 acre RIT campus landscape and hardscape under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor.  Primary duties involve the maintenance and repair of all exterior grounds features and daily pickup of trash from all areas of campus.  Some duties are seasonal in nature and include mowing, snow clearing, pruning and leaf removal.
This position requires a self-motivated individual who is willing to perform manual labor; has the ability to withstand irregular and long hours during winter weather conditions; has the ability to tolerate prolonged exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, unpleasant odors and loud noises.

Job Responsibilities

Please note: The hours for this position could be between Sun-Sat 6am-11pm based on the needs of the department.

The Groundskeeper II is considered essential personnel. This means that this person must be willing to work a flexible schedule including call-in work that could encompass various shifts, weekends, holidays, Institute emergencies, and times other than normal work schedules. 

  • Care for established lawns and athletic fields. This includes:
    • Mowing, mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, and trimming/edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
    • Assist the Athletic Field Specialist in preparing all athletic fields for their use by RIT’s collegiate, club, and intramural teams.
    • Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary for these activities.
    • Select and use appropriate PPE equipment for tasks performed and conditions encountered.
  • Winter snow removal and seasonal maintenance. This includes proper techniques for removing snow from roads, walkways, parking lots, and stairs, as well as coordinating and/or performing winter snow removal on artificial and natural turf fields using techniques to prevent damage to fields, surfaces, and their bases. Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary to perform these tasks.
  • As directed, provide proper upkeep of hard surface areas including, sidewalks, concrete pavers, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other outdoor structures and amenities.
  • Plant, trim, and prune trees, shrubs and flowers as directed.
  • Stewardship of the University property, equipment, and tools. This includes all department equipment and all University landscape and property contained therein (statues, shrubbery, waste containers, fences, benches, etc.)
  • Remove litter from grounds. This includes:
    • Emptying trash containers.
    • Sweeping doorways, steps, and fire exits.
    • Removing signage, posters, and graffiti from campus buildings and grounds.
    • Removing and properly disposing of dead animals, wash away blood, other body fluids, and other situations as directed by FMS or Public Safety.
  • Provide support for special events throughout campus. Deliver signage, grills, and barricades.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED plus one year experience in outdoor all seasons work in a commercial or university campus setting.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
