Job Summary The Office of Professional and Career Development is currently accepting applications for the position of Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Summer and Fall semesters.
Responsibilities
At least 60% of the student’s responsibility as a GTA must be devoted to the direct instruction of students, typically in a classroom
Essential Functions Career Coaching
Provide career coaching to Harbert College of Business students, including resume reviews and support, cover letter guidance and reviews, mock interview, and LinkedIn profile creation and networking advice. Depending on graduate assistant’s training and background, may contribute to other coaching needs, such as career exploration, choosing a major, and graduate school preparation. Coaching services are provided during scheduled appointments, as well as drop-in hours. Become well versed in, inform students of, and leverage a multitude of in-house resources, including Handshake, Big Interview, and much more.
Events and Meetings
Participate in and assist with the planning and execution of multiple OPCDand HCOB events for students such as the career fairs, Business Bash, workshops and programming throughout the fall and spring, tabling events, employer meetings, Signing Day, and major-specific career development events. Participate in staff meetings. Assist in program data collection and analysis from Handshake, course feedback, and various student surveys.
Teaching
GAs with 18 hours or more of graduate-level courses may be asked to instruct 1 – 2 sections of the 1-credit hour BUSI 1010 or BUSI 2010 course each semester typical enrollment is approximately 60 students per section but could vary depending on semester needs. GAs with less than 18 hours may be asked to assist in the instruction of these classes.
Responsibilities: Interact with students in each section via Canvas, email, and by appointment or office hours (i.e., 1 hour per credit hour taught). Development of lecture, activities, and grade assignments related to the course. Collaborate and share with other instructors on best practices, course activities, course creation, and course revisions. Topics and areas of instruction include transition to college; academic planning; major selection; professional and career development; and career tool guidance including resumes, cover letters, social media, professional communication, and interviews. Collaborate with and manage an undergraduate peer instructor assigned to each section.
