The University of Maryland School of Social Work (SSW) has an opportunity for an Academic Advisor. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Academic Advisor is charged with the development and delivery of academic advising contributing to the academic success of all MSW students. This position partners with faculty and staff across the SSW including frequent collaboration with the Offices of Admissions, Academic Affairs and Records and Registration.

Essential Functions:
- Provide academic advising for all MSW students using various platforms including individual and group advising in person, virtually, and via email.
- Monitors student progress to degree attainment and conducts degree checks to ensure compliance with degree program requirements.
- Provide guidance and ongoing counseling to current students about their plans of study, policies and procedures relating to grading options, course withdrawals, leaves of absence, degree completion requirements, and campus resources and opportunities.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate processes, procedures, and technologies to ensure efficient and effective advising. Stays informed regarding advising best practices and maintain advising records.
- Participate in, and facilitate, events for newly admitted and current students.
- Maintain advising website and coordinates with other offices in the MSW program to provide accurate and up-to-date information about MSW curriculum and policies.
- Collaborate with and support faculty related to student career and professional advising.
- Assist students with identification of long-term goals and career plans. Ability to advise students regarding career hopes, plans, and trajectory.
- Ability to collaborate with other Career Development Center staff to bring appropriate and engaging programming to students.
- Supports and enhances a sense of belonging and success of students from traditionally marginalized populations.
- Serve on related school and campus advisory committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree in Business Management Social Work, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, or related field. Master’s Degree in Social Work is preferred
Experience: Three (3) years of administration of a program, preferably in higher education or healthcare setting. Prior experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education is preferred.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective communicator in both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and/or related advising platforms.
- Knowledge of social work field. Ability to talk with student about how course choice impacts professional goals.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse populations and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
- Demonstrates skill in understanding of cultural differences.
The Hiring Range for this position is in the $60,000s, commensurate with edcuation and experience.
