This position develops and implements innovative processes that enable robust manufacturing for propulsion sites as part of the double down manufacturing optimization strategy.
The Execution Controls Engineer position will include the design, build, and troubleshooting of electrical control systems for machinery and equipment that manufacture best-in-class and tech-forward casting, transmissions, engines, drive unites and batteries. In this role you will be applying your technical expertise to deliver exceptional propulsion products that inspire customer loyalty. You will help to implement standards and procedures as you work alongside with automation system suppliers to coordinate machine modification needs with engineering and maintenance. Other typical duties include developing, debugging, and troubleshooting control logic programs or robot programs along with other related functions at either the supplier or plant site.
As an Execution Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for execution of the manufacturing optimization projects at propulsion sites. This includes source, design, coordination of build, coordinating of installation, debug, runoff and qualify equipment for several current and future propulsion processes, from initial design to implementation at the manufacturing site. Work is performed in a team environment, consisting of daily interactions with product engineering, plant engineering, controls, maintenance, operations, and a multitude of others, to successfully implement this manufacturing optimizations. Work will be performed in a plant environment where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative is exercised as well as a high level of independent judgment. This position involves travels to various GM sites & supplier locations to support project implementation.
The Role:
- Engineer, Design, Build and Implement machinery, tools & equipment for the Double Down Manufacturing Optimization Projects in propulsion.
- Lead the Plant Floor Controls Execution of double down optimization projects.
- Follow, train, and enforce standardized processes as defined in PoME for program execution.
- Assist process EGM controls teams on reviewing and approving electrical and pneumatic equipment designs, insuring use of approved components.
- Assisting with runoff checklists at OEM, completing in plant, capturing OEM issues and assisting with their closure
- Submit spending forecasts and track to plan.
- Completes plant floor debug and runoff, following controls open issues to resolution Safety Validations (Including 3rd party), SOP, TIS and MPS/SCS Placard for green tags.
- Network Validations & PC Joins Completed
- Automation & Material Handling Communication
- Patch deployment for identified viruses/issues.
- Perform continuous improvement as needed on fault logic, traceability, developing corrective actions with the goal of closure of all ME open issues for Launch Deliverables
- Assist with process of Wireless Access to the Contractor at Work Network, Contractor’s Laptop check (PESA)
- Execution of Software licenses.
- Performs controls activities related to validation and implementation of IT Systems
- Lead the controls lessons learned gathering activity and feedback the information to EGM Controls Central Team
- Dedicated to meeting the expectations/requirements of Launch Deliverables to final customer.
- Works closely with multi-disciplined teams to understand functional requirements, contribute to generation of innovative ideas, develop project plans and implement appropriate solutions.
- Direct the design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch and continuous improvement of equipment and tools required in plants to produce high-quality parts and propulsion products.
- Monitor expenditures and timing for the program and/or equipment, ensuring spending stays within allocated budget.
- Flexibility to work during holidays and weekends to support installation of equipment at Plants.
- Provide technical direction to and oversight of outside vendor sources.
- Develop and test of advanced process technology.
- Equipment Runoff @ OEM.
- Develop and maintain necessary documentation (PFD, PFMEA, PCP)
- Leverage GD&T skillsets to ensure manufacturing equipment, tooling, assembly processes, and quality verifications procedures meet design requirement.
- Knowledge of or experience with Bill of Equipment (BOE), Bill of Process (BOP), Bill of Sediment Elimination (BOSE) and Bill of Operations (BOO).
- Travel as required.
- Collaboration with the Operations Team on Program Deliverables:
- PFMEAs Review / Simulation Review / Control Plans / Launch Deliverables.
- Plant Equipment Install / Debug / Launch / Continuous Improvement.
- Project management for the manufacturing optimization Execution.
- Follow standardized processes as defined in PoME for program execution.
- Supports plant floor equipment installation, tracking and countermeasures.
- Develop and lead the PPAP review meetings in area of responsibility utilizing the PPAP checklist, capturing exceptions.
- Closure of all ME open issues for Launch Deliverables.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as a controls engineer
- Bachelor’s Degree with major in engineering or equivalent experience/training
- Strong technical knowledge of electrical/control systems and the ability to apply these concepts within a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated basic understanding of mechanical concepts involving machine designs, process requirements involved in the manufacturing process.
- Experience in PLC and HMI programming, Ethernet and/or DeviceNet networks
- Knowledge of servo motors, motion control and drives
- Ability to design and trouble shoot electrical controls systems
- Demonstrated Excellent level of analytical ability, communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues
- Demonstrated ability to manage challenging projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results
- Prior manufacturing controls and/or assignments with successful individual achievements
- Demonstrated ability to use computer, interpret blueprints, engineering drawings and learn new systems
- Experience in troubleshooting equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated understanding of plant floor and design for manufacturability.
- ME assignments with successful individual achievements or strong team-based achievements.
- Knowledge of or experience with propulsion processes BOE, BOP, BOSE and BOO preferred.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD, Team Center, Microsoft Project, Simulation.
- Statistical problem solving training
- Proficient working in development environments
- General knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics is a plus.
- Prior work experience as controls engineer in the automotive field
- Knowledge of GM’s common global controls architecture
