The Department of Ophthalmology is the only academic eye institution in the region offering the most advanced treatments across all areas of eye care. The Department of Ophthalmology sees over 120,000 patients a year with almost 5,400 surgeries.

This position is responsible for coordinating aspects of Shiley Eye Institute efforts in the areas of risk assessment, communication and genetic counseling of patients seen in the Shiley Eye Institute rare and inherited diseases as well as Oculo-Oncology and retina clinics. The scope of the project includes patients and family members undergoing genetic testing for disorders impacting their visual system. This position will also provided genetic counseling for patients enrolled in various clinical studies aimed at identifying and working with patients with rare and inherited retina disease. Will work independently as a licensed and certified genetic counselor.

This position will also provide outreach and education services to Ophthalmology residents and fellows as well as medical students requesting to shadow in the Ophthalmology clinic. The incumbent will participate in providing content expertise for upcoming research opportunities regarding genetics and advising ophthalmic health care providers on referral, testing, and management guidelines.

• Masters degree in clinical Genetic Counseling from an accredited training program.

• Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics.

• Experience and knowledge in the field of Medical Genetics, especially the basic principles of Genetic counseling, and ability to apply knowledge from the areas of cancer genetics and other related medical specialties.

• Demonstrated counseling skill and ability to provide genetic counseling. Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary genetics/health team while providing genetic counseling.

• Demonstrated awareness of psychological aspects of genetic counseling and ability to interact effectively with clients and families in stressful situations.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver presentations to professional and lay groups to provide education about genetics and ocular diseases to enrolled clinical research patients.

• Demonstrated skills in writing, documenting clinical interventions and comprehensive counseling reports.

• Excellent organizational skills. Excellent customer service and problem solving skills. Ability to work well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both over the telephone, in writing, and in person. Demonstrated ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.

• Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

• Knowledge of research techniques to develop, implement, and evaluate genetics and clinical research projects

• Experience working independently while completing assigned responsibilities and/or experience working as lead Genetic Counselor.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient medical information.

• Demonstrated skills in teaching and supervising Master’s level Genetic Counseling students and/or individuals shadowing the career field. Ability to provide feedback and evaluation in accordance with American Board of Genetic Counseling standards.

• Experience lecturing in classroom and public event settings to a wide ranges of audiences (physicians, medical trainees, nurses, allied health providers, college and high school students, patients, public).

• Basic statistics knowledge.

• Previous genetic counseling experience, especially cancer genetics experience.

• Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability strongly preferred.

• Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

• Must be able to obtain annual TB/Fit test clearances.

• Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and Licensed as a Genetic Counselor by the state of California (provisional or full license).
