What we do

Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the University for the “real world”, is one of Australia’s fastest growing research universities. We equip our students with the skills needed in an increasingly disrupted and challenging world.  Our strategic plan aims to provide transformative education and research relevant to the community. The Vice-Chancellor and President of QUT seeks an experienced, qualified lawyer, reporting directly to her, to lead the Legal Services Department.

The role

The General Counsel (“GC”), a key Executive team member, is responsible for the provision of high-quality legal services and strategic legal advice to the VC and President, Council, Senior Executive and others at QUT. This area covers a range of contractual, legislative, program and policy issues across the University. The GC will manage, inspire and lead the team to deliver in-house legal advice on matters from procurement, IT services, property, employment, discrimination and student issues, as well as commercial, contract and intellectual property law.

In this role, engagement with external parties, such as legal firms, various industry and government leaders, staff in other higher education institutions and Commonwealth and State Government departments, in relation to QUT’s legal and statutory obligations is critical. The GC’s responsibilities include managing the Assurance and Audit department, oversight and engagement of external lawyers, and strategic leadership and effective operational management of the legal services department as the chief legal officer for QUT.
