Working as part of the Campus Operations (Sustainability, Environments and Logistics) team, The Gardner will provide a range of services to ensure that grounds maintenance and associated services of Deakin University, under the control of Campus Operations, are maintained in excellent condition to meet agreed productivity and standards.

The role operates and maintains various types of horticultural and earth moving machinery and is responsible for the care of plant, tools and equipment. Gardeners act on or report areas requiring maintenance and improvement and make sure relevant personal safety clothing and equipment is utilised to ensure work undertaken is carried out safely

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Generate new ideas and shares those ideas with others in the work area to improve process and practice.
  • Deliver effective and efficient outcomes and outputs against team and operational work plans.
  • Take personal responsibility and show initiative to meeting goals and objectives contributing to an inclusive team environment.
  • Contribute feedback and suggestions and identify situations in which change is needed to improve policy and practice.
  • Recognise the importance of teamwork and of effective communication amongst team members and build rapport within immediate team in ways that are respectful and inclusive of others.
  • Clarify expectations and respond promptly to client requests, queries, or complaints to ensure client needs are met to agreed standards and timelines.
  • Plan and maintain landscaping to set standards and schedules whilst minimising waste and materials.
  • Undertake repairs and maintenance works and ensure compliance with safety and statutory requirements.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (minimum 5 years’ experience) or a qualification in horticulture, landscape construction or design
  • Experience in the design, planning and delivery of horticultural improvements in public open space
  • Knowledge and skills to maintain plants, shrubs, trees and turf areas to maintain optimum health including pruning to Australian Standards, fertilising and pest and insect management, and managing trees in an urban environment
  • Knowledge and skills to identify sites for tree and garden planting, including detailed knowledge of modern plant species and cultivars
  • Working knowledge and experience on the operation of different types of machinery used within the industry
  • Appropriate knowledge of industry best work practices and implementation of safe work practices and occupational health and safety requirements
  • Experience in irrigation installation, fault finding and repairs. *Desirable
