Fully Funded Swansea University and CISM PhD Scholarship: Advanced Dielectrics for Next Generation Electronics and Optoelectronics

Funding providers: Swansea University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials

Subject areas: Materials Science, Dielectrics, Semiconductors, Electronics, Optoelectronics

Project start date:

  • 1 January 2023 (Enrolment open from mid-Dec)

Project description:

Dielectrics are important elements of all electronic and optoelectronic components irrespective of the constituent semiconductor platform be it silicon, compound, oxide or solution processable. In this exciting project, we will investigate the use of a novel new deposition technique called Molecular Vapour Deposition (MVD) to create advanced, high performance dielectric and other functional coatings for challenging applications such as vertical transistors, wide gap electronics and large area organic and perovskite optoelectronics. MVD is capable of producing very high quality, highly conformal and dense layers with a range of dielectric constants – and crucially does so at low temperature < 200C. The project will be prosecuted as part of the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials portfolio and benefit from the £50M facility to come on-line in mid-2022 including state-of-the-art clean room and processing tools. The project will be closely connected with industry and the successful candidate will have a fantastic opportunity to be trained in all aspects of semiconductor and dielectric device processing.

Eligibility

Candidates must normally hold an undergraduate degree at 2.1 level or preferably Master’s at Merit (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University) in Physics, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Chemistry.

English Language requirements: If applicable – IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 5.5 in each individual component) or Swansea recognised equivalent.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to applicants eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate only, as defined by UKCISA regulations .

This scholarship covers the full cost of UK tuition fees and an annual stipend of £17,668 for three years.

Additional research expenses will also be available.
