Position Description

The Department of Information Technology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and creative Full-Stack Drupal Developer to work as part of the HMS IT Web and Advanced Research Platforms Team, delivering web solutions for the HMS research, education and administration communities. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of web support for HMS.

The Full-Stack Drupal Developer, reporting to the Web Development Manager (WDM), is responsible for consultation, requirements specifications, design, development, and maintenance of website projects, from small sites for research-focused labs and core facilities to the main HMS flagship website (https://hms.harvard.edu), as well as in support of initiatives and grants. The position will work closely with the WDM, project team members, and our partners in the Office of Communications and External Relations (OCER) to gather and clarify business requirements, develop technical scope and documentation; design, write, test, and maintain Drupal modules and themes, and integrate Drupal with external APIs; participate in design and architecture reviews of new applications and major system enhancements; build upon and maintain a high-performance, scalable hosting platform. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong customer-service ethic and a positive can-do attitude among members of the HMS community on web-related activities.

Our small web team has had a positive impact in the short time it has existed, moving HMS from an environment in which decentralized and uncoordinated web support within individual groups was the norm, to providing a centralized resource quad-wide that has already overseen the launch of both an internal portal, MyHMS, serving faculty, staff and students, and the school’s Drupal 9-based flagship website as well as many smaller projects. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participate and engage in research, iterative design, and experimentation to build, develop and maintain websites on Drupal 9 and a variety of APIs.
• Gather and communicate technical requirements both to and from customers. Build upon and maintain a high-performance, scalable platform hosting multiple external and internal websites.
• Write back- and front-end custom Drupal code (modules, themes, libraries).
• Generate design templates that demonstrate UI effects. Maintain an interface library of widgets and tools that can be reused and repurposed to streamline web development and delivery.
• Participate in design and architecture reviews of new applications and major system enhancements.

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus a minimum of 4 years of development experience in web and internet technologies, preferably in a large organization or in an agency setting.
• Experience building and maintaining sites in Drupal 7/8/9.
• Experience developing custom modules and themes for Drupal 9.
• Strong knowledge of semantic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.Familiarity with modern front-end development tools such as Sass and Gulp.
• Knowledge of and adherence to Drupal best practices and to web-accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0/2.1).
• Motivation to remain current with existing and emerging web technologies.
• Strong attention to detail, and analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work independently and handle multiple assigned tasks with excellent time- management, organization, and planning skills.
• Ability to function as part of a team and to switch between a big-picture mindset and detailed project work.
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to build win-win relationships with partners.
• Active participation in the Drupal community (discussion on issues, patches, contributed modules).
• Experience working on higher-education websites.
• Broad technical-delivery experience and knowledge of agile development practices and toolsets, such as Jira.
• Knowledge of Acquia platforms (Acquia Cloud and Site Factory).
• Basic knowledge of use and administration of LAMP stacks.

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
