The University of Klagenfurt is pleased to announce the following open position at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Technical Sciences, in compliance with the provisions of Art. 98 (permanent) or Art. 99 (limited to 5 years):
Full Professor of Optimization (all genders welcome)
This is a full-time position, available from 1 October 2024. Whether the position will be implemented in compliance with the provisions of Art. 98 (permanent) or Art. 99 of the Austrian Universities Act (limited to 5 years) will be decided in the course of the appointment procedure.

The professorship will be embedded within the new Area of Research Excellence “Multiple Perspectives in Optimization (MPOpt)” with its well-established Doctoral Programme in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and within the Faculty of Technical Sciences ( ). The department provides a vivid, friendly, and research-oriented environment. We are looking for a highly qualified and internationally recognized scholar with high engagement in developing and sustaining an ambitious and innovative research programme that enriches the Department of Mathematics as well as MPOpt.
Area of responsibility
The duties of the position include:
- Representing the field of Mathematical Optimization in research and teaching
- Engaging in the Area of Research Excellence “Multiple Perspectives in Optimization” as well as in the Doctoral Programme “Modeling – Analysis – Optimization”
- Teaching in relevant degree programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral level, both in German and in English, as well as supervision of student projects and academic theses
- Service teaching in Mathematics for students with different backgrounds, including Informatics, Robotics & AI, Business & Economics students
- Advising and mentoring of students and early career researchers
- Competitive research grant acquisition and management
- Collaboration with industry partners
- Participation in university management
- Participation in third mission and public relations activities
Requirements
- Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Mathematics or a relevant neighbouring field
- Excellent research and publication record in Mathematical Optimization, complementing the research groups at the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics; in particular substantial methodological and theoretical contributions
- Experience in the acquisition, implementation, and management of competitive third-party funded fundamental research projects of a relevant volume
- Embeddedness in the international research community
- Teaching experience at university level and didactic competence
- Experience in the (co-)supervision of academic theses
- Fluency in English

- Ability to cooperate within the Area of Research Excellence “Multiple Perspectives in Optimization” as well as in the Doctoral Programme “Modeling – Analysis – Optimization”
- Excellent scientific dissemination skills
- International experience

Additional information
German language skills are not a formal prerequisite, but fluency in German is expected within two years. The remit of the professorship requires that the future professor will establish Klagenfurt as their primary place of work.

The salary is subject to negotiation. The minimum gross salary for the position at this level (salary group A1 according to the Austrian Universities’ Collective Bargaining Agreement) is currently € 89,100 per year.
In accordance with the Austrian Income Tax Act, an attractive relocation tax allowance can be granted for the first five years in the case of appointments to professorships in Austria. The prerequisites are subject to examination on a case by case basis.
