Offer DescriptionThe PLUS invites applications for a permanent position asFull Professor in Roman Law and Modern Private Lawin the Department of Private Law at the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics.Starting Date: 1 October 2024The Department of Private Law represents private law in all its breadth in research and teaching and is fully committed to the model of universally trained lawyers on the basis of historically informed jurisprudence. The future position holder is expected to conduct outstanding research in the field of Roman law and private law and to actively represent both fields in teaching. In teaching, the participation in covering the entire range of courses offered by the Department of Private Law in all degree programmes (diploma/bachelor’s/master’s/doctoral programmes) of the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics is expected, including courses in Roman law.Since Roman law, as the basis of continental European private law, has a very international dimension, international exchange has been maintained, promoted, and developed to a particularly high degree. This international orientation is to be further strengthened, which is why an excellent standing in the Romanist scientific community and a strong connection to international research is required. The department’s tradition of supporting international researchers, who can present their work in the “Kaser Seminar” and who find ideal research conditions in an excellently equipped Romance Studies library, can be built on. In order to be able to continue with this, great attention should be paid to maintaining the high standard of this internationally renowned library.RequirementsResearch Field Juridical sciences » Roman law Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsGeneral requirements include: * Academic education and a Phd/doctorate degree or international equivalent appropriate for the advertised position;

  • qualification to teach at a university level at least in Roman Law (venia docendi) or equivalent;
  • outstanding academic suitability in research and teaching, taking into account the academic age and the respective biography;
  • suitable pedagogical and didactical skills;
  • suitability to manage a university institution;
  • relevant international experience and proof of integration into the international scientific community, respectively;
  • good written and spoken German language skills.

Additional requirements: * If necessary, quick familiarisation with the special features of Austrian civil law and the willingness to engage in corresponding teaching and research activities;

  • active participation in research projects and courses of the Department of Private Law;
  • willingness to participate in and expand the research and teaching partnerships of the PLUS;
  • willingness to participate in university committees and self-government bodies of the university;
  • experience in modern science management and in the acquisition of third-party funding;
  • willingness to cooperate and to work interdisciplinary as well as social skills;
  • willingness and qualification to assume leadership positions;
  • ability to lecture and examine in English or, if necessary, in another foreign language.
