Library and Cultural Services (L&CS) are provided across the University’s three campuses.  In August 2021, The University’s Lakeside Theatre and art gallery, Art Exchange joined the library to form Library and Cultural Services, and a restructure of the team has been undertaken to more closely integrate the arts functions within L&CS.  

The Lakeside Theatre with its fully equipped 200-seat auditorium and flexible studio is situated on the University of Essex Colchester campus, The theatre hosts and produces a diverse and thought provoking programme of theatre, live art, dance, music and comedy. It is a place of learning, curiosity and discovery. The Lakeside Theatre provides workshops, master-classes and research and development opportunities to students, staff and professional partners.

The Lakeside Theatre works in close collaboration with the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies to support the realisation of their academic plan. Student work is placed within the broader context of a professional programme of performances presented at Lakeside Theatre, providing on site access to a diverse range of professional theatrical works throughout the academic year.

Duties of the Role

The Lakeside Theatre on the Colchester campus of the University of Essex is looking for an enthusiastic person to be responsible for the supervision of the Lakeside Theatre, front of house. The successful candidate will support the Theatre Manager in making sure that the Lakeside Theatre is a well-run and welcoming theatre for students, customers, visiting companies and performers alike. The Front of House Supervisor is responsible for a portion of the theatre administration and operations, the Lakeside Theatre bar, front of house staffing, compliance with Health & Safety and that high standards of customer care are delivered throughout the Lakeside Theatre.

Skills and qualifications required

To be successful, you will be educated to A-Level or have equivalent experience or qualifications. You will have experience in supervising an arts venue, supervising a Front of House Team, operating a successful Box Office System, and experience in a hospitality setting. You will also have experience and an understanding of appropriate legislation and licensing, Fire Safety procedures, Health & Safety legislation and safeguarding of children & vulnerable adults policies.

You must have excellent communication skills, including both written and verbal with experience of working in a customer focused role. You will have excellent administrative and accounting skills, along with impeccable attention to detail.
