Working for the Dean of Students’ Office
The Dean of Students’ Office supports all students in the pursuit of their academic success. We collaborate with faculties, offices, and services to deliver effective programming and providing leadership on university policies and initiatives for our students. The Learning Strategies Unit within this office provides professional academic strategies instruction to students in all university programs and at all levels. We accomplish this through engagement of industry-best learning strategies, through empathy and understanding of our customer base, and as we adapt to each student’s academic program requirements, inter-sectional identities, and educational and cultural backgrounds. We care about and want to support our students in what they need to be successful.
Position
Reporting to the Director of Learning Strategies, the Fresh Start Program Coordinator will effectively maintain, develop and deliver a specialized program for students who have been required to withdraw from their program of study. This position is responsible to lead these students in re-establishing satisfactory academic standing for admission/re-admission to the University of Alberta. Major areas of responsibilities include: individual assessment of each student’s learning challenges, development and delivery of ongoing-person/online learning sessions through individual and group interactions, and evaluation and recommendation for readmission. This position works closely with their assigned faculties, the Registrar’s Office and Learning Strategies’ internal administration. This demanding yet very satisfying position (and program) gives students a fresh start to academically succeed at the University of Alberta.
Duties
- Evaluates and contributes to resolving the students’ learning needs
- In person program/resource development and delivery
- Online program/resource development and delivery (e-class currently)
- Program administration and planning
- Communication and collaboration with faculties, the Registrar’s Office and other administrative and interested parties
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a related field required, with a minimum two years experience working in a post-secondary academic advising and/or Academic Success Centre position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
- Comprehensive knowledge of post-secondary learning and administrative environment at the University of Alberta (or comparable institution(s))
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, the U of A’s policies, procedures, collective agreements
- Strong business acumen to confidently work with multiple stakeholders
- Strong facilitation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of program management philosophy and application (and applicable software(s))
- Strong organization, accuracy, and attention to detail
- Exceptional communicator with the ability to influence a broad and diverse range of stakeholders through effective relationships
- Minimum two years instruction and curriculum development experience, preferably at a post-secondary level
- Computer proficiency in relations to electronic records, curriculum development, e-learning technologies including eClass/Moodle or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience contributing to and/or executing organizational and unit strategies and measurements of success
- Proficiency with University of Alberta and University of Alberta Hospital policies and procedures
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively and to drive for results
- Strong organizational and analytic skills with attention to details and deadlines
- High tolerance for ambiguity; adaptable to a changing environment
