Your Opportunity

Our award-winning Transportation team has designed and managed hundreds of projects across Canada, the U.S. and globally, within our Infrastructure business. Stantec is seeking a seasoned, highly skilled individual to lead and oversee ongoing freight rail and associated industrial market services activities across Canada. The role of a Freight Rail Lead is to guide our Transportation Group in Western Canada and act as a liaison to corporate/sector leadership on various rail engineering and planning projects at both private and public clients. In addition to providing technical expertise and leadership in direct support of our projects, it is expected that you will conduct business development efforts in the preparation of proposals/statements of qualifications, account management, the pursuit of new clients/opportunities, and the consideration of new and innovative service offerings.

This role is intended to be based in Western Canada. The chosen candidate will report to the Regional Business Leader in Canada West for Transportation and work closely with other Sector and Business Leaders in Transportation in North America. The candidate will be embedded into the regional transportation group, with a focus on top line growth, with technical delivery support available from the local transportation groups.

In this role, your primary objective is to expand the Freight Rail Services practice across Western Canada. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of building and maintaining client relationships with rail and associated industry clients to pursue, win, and deliver new consulting services and projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Actively contribute to win strategies, key pursuits and successful project execution and become involved at a hands-on level on projects should issues impacting client satisfaction or project management best practices escalate

  • Actively contribute to the growth of the Rail Sector in Western Canada through collaboration, business development, key pursuit, and sales strategy

  • Prepare a Rail Sector Strategic Plan for each Fiscal Year in collaboration with the Regional Business Leader and Transit and Rail Sector Leader

  • Expand our reach and client base utilizing strong marketing, business development, and sales account management plans

  • Provide input to the multiple transportation Regional Business Leader in identifying and following through on key hires, acquisitions, major projects and cross-regional pursuits including possible national client accounts

  • Responsible for implementing the marketing and business development (M&BD) plan for the Freight Rail Sector

  • Increase visibility of Stantec by sharing our knowledge and innovation story through key client engagements to enhance our reputation and drive revenues, both top-line and bottom-line

Specific Requirements

  • Act in account management role for major Rail client within the region and beyond

  • Responsible for providing quality assurance/quality control reviews of project design documents/reports

  • Perform on technically complex multi-disciplinary projects and act as a technical resource by providing senior guidance and mentorship to other team members

  • Provide technical expertise in the development of project documents such as design drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.

  • Prepare works scopes and fees and in turn negotiate contracts with clients and / or review agencies.

  • May directly supervise/manage other aviation engineering and planning personnel

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

  • Travel may be required.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to effectively communicate with assigned direct report personnel and project teams and present information and ideas for audiences of all levels, both internally and externally

  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple complex projects concurrently.

  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and effectively manage time and resources to meet project budgets and schedules

  • In-depth understanding of industry regulations, authorities, and organizations

  • Understanding of client expectations, budgeting, proposal writing, invoicing, and collecting accounts receivable

  • Technical expertise in all relevant areas of design and understanding of various design methods.

  • A proven track record in the ability to grow a team and win new clients as well as foster the growth of your team’s portfolio and geographic reach through mentorship and leadership

  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite including Teams and Microsoft Project.

  • Strong leadership and written/verbal communication skills are essential.

  • Ability to travel throughout Canada, and United States, and must have a valid driver’s license and current passport

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering & Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). Minimum of 20 years of experience as a consultant working for private and public clients in the Transit and Rail sectors. Experience in effectively managing, leading, and mentoring personnel and project teams.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • Lower Mainland $143,800 – Lower Mainland $222,900 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in BC (Lower Mainland includes Vancouver & Burnaby)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
