The Colorado State University Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is hiring a Forest Timber Management Technician who will support the natural resources program at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB), Florida. This position is full-time (40 hours/week), 12-month duration located at Eglin AFB. The successful candidate will gain unique, entry-level experience on a wide-range of natural resource management projects on DoD lands.

Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

This is an Open Pool position. The Forest Timber Management and Restoration Technician will provide support to Eglin’s Forestry Program in managing timber harvesting and inspections. The technician will use GPS equipment to evaluate and mark harvesting boundaries, collect and manage timber inventory data, and inspect harvest and reforestation sites. A majority of this work will occur outdoors and requires use of gas-powered equipment, including chainsaws. Safety training for operating chainsaws and ATVs will be provided. The variety of timber-management responsibilities will provide valuable experience to anyone interested in a career in forestry or natural resources management.

Position Duty Station: Eglin Air Force Base
Eglin AFB is a 465,000-acre United States military installation, making it one of the largest AFBs in the world, and the largest forested installation. The base’s undeveloped area, which accounts for 405,000 acres, is primarily used for military training and ordnance testing and research, and secondarily for timber management and outdoor recreation, with over 205,000 acres open to the public. Major focal points of the Eglin AFB natural resources program include timber management, outdoor recreation, endangered and protected species management, erosion control, wildland fire management and prescribed burning, and many other special projects. The holistic approach to ecosystem management at Eglin AFB has led to exciting outcomes, such as federal down-listing of the Okaloosa Darter from endangered to threatened status and surpassing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recovery goal of 350 breeding pairs for the red-cockaded woodpecker. Moreover, these achievements resulted in no significant impacts to the Eglin mission while greatly improving the base’s future mission capabilities. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• B.S. in a natural resources, environmental compliance, or ecosystem science related field.
• Must be physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations for long periods of time under varying weather conditions. Field activities will require frequent walking, pulling, lifting, and using motorized equipment and tools. Both independent and group field work will be required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• Must be able to operate federal vehicles, including cars and ATVs.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
