FLUP|1 RESEARCH GRANT FOR PHD STUDENTS| SOCIOLOGY(Refª 2022/59)

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP) hereby opens this Call for Applications for one (1) research grant for PhD Students of Sociology for the project “112CO2 – Low temperature catalytic methane decomposition for COx-free hydrogen production”, financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 952219.
1. Research field / Scientific area: Sociology
2. Admission requirements:
To apply for the research grant, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
a) Master degree in Sociology*
b) Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD course in Sociology in the academic year 2022/2023 (requirement to be proven up to the act of contracting.
*If the candidate holds a doctoral degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions and Article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018 of 3 August, and any formalities established therein be fulfilled up to the date of the contracting act.
3. Preferred requirements:
a) Availability to start the scholarship from December 2022;
b) Good knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methodologies in the field of social sciences and, in particular, sociology;
c) Development of thesis in the 112CO2 project scientific field or similar.
4. Work Plan:
The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:
1- Bibliographic research work;
2- Data collection, organization and analysis (quantitative and qualitative data)
3- Instruct and collaborate on scientific reports written in English;
4- Streamline the project’s dissemination and communication actions;
5- Prepare and participate in the project meetings, conducted in English;
6- Write the scientific reports;
7- Participate in the monitoring of activities and their control;
8- Participate in the preparation and publication of scientific papers.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:
Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of 18 August, as amended by Decree Law no. 123/2019, of 28 August; Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Porto – Regulation 184/2021, of 3 March, amended by Deliberation no. 1301/2021, published in D.R., 2nd series, on 22 December 2021; in the alternative, Regulation no. 950/2019, of 29 November, published in Diário da República, no. 241, 2nd Series, of 16 December (FCT Research Grants Regulation, I.P.); Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August (Legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions); Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7 January.
6. Workplace:
The work will be developed at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Cristina Clara Ribeiro Parente, Associate Professor at FLUP.
7. Duration:
The scholarship has a predictable duration of 12 months. The scholarship contract, on an exclusivity regime, may be renewed, for equal or different periods, according to institutional needs and financial availability, up to the maximum limit of the duration of the project, and may in no case exceed the limits defined in the Regulation for the typology of the grant concerned.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The monthly maintenance allowance is €1144,64, according to FCT. Payment will be made by FLUP by bank transference. In addition, the grant holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
9. Evaluation methods:
Curriculum evaluation (CA) and, if the jury deems it necessary, selection interview (E) to the first 3 best ranked candidates in the CA. The final classification will be obtained by the following formula: 0,5 x CA + 0,5 x E, on a scale of 0 to 20 points. If there is no interview, the final classification will be equal to the one obtained in the CA.
The target factors of the curricular evaluation are:
- Academic background, considering the classification obtained in bachelor’s and master’s degrees[1] (50%);
- Evidence of the capacity to produce and process information (30%);
- Evidence of proficiency in English (oral and written) (20%);
The evaluation factors of the selection interview will be:
- Curricular discussion (60%);
- Interpersonal skills and motivation (40%).
The failure of candidates to appear at the interview phase of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, being excluded from the procedure.
Based on the final ranking list, a reserve list will be created, which will be used for the eventual hiring of new scholarship holders under this project. In the event that none of the candidates demonstrates that they have the profile indicated for carrying out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to the competition.

11. Disclosure of the results:
Evaluation results will be communicated by email to the address provided by the candidates in the application form.
In compliance with the provisions of the Article 121 of the Code of Administrative Procedure (“Código do Procedimento Administrativo”), after being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal.
The final decision will be announced within a maximum period of 60 working days after the analysis of
applicants’ arguments presented in the preliminary hearing.
