Description
Position/Project Specifics:

Sacramento River Non-natal Rearing Evaluation and Restoration project, addresses the Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) recovery goals and actions for the Upper Sacramento River and miscellaneous tributaries by identifying baseline non-natal stream utilization. As well as identifying opportunities for habitat improvement, increased juvenile fish use of non-natal tributaries and increased spawning habitat production. Under the supervision of the on-site Project Manager, this position will act as Fishery Biologist to assist with leading a field survey crew performing surveys on seasonal streams and tributaries of the Upper Sacramento River. The majority of the survey season is anticipated to fall between October and May, the position will be full-time year-round and is based in Red Bluff, CA. The candidate must be able to conduct physically challenging field work in potentially stressful situations, all while maintaining a positive attitude and encouraging crew members to do the same. This position will require working with multiple agencies, technicians and biologists, so having good interpersonal skills are required. Together with the Project Manager the Biologist will help compile and analyze data, develop annual reports, and maintain proper scientific collecting permits.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Lead and manage a 1-2-person crew in daily field operations at multiple survey sites.
Make standardized observations including, but not limited to, fish species identification, sex, length, and reproductive status.
Identify, handle, anesthetize, and collect biological data from juvenile salmonids.
Collect eDNA water samples at various pre-determined sites along non-natal streams.
Accurately input biological and environmental data on field forms, tablets, and/or desktop computers.
Maintain databases and datasets in programs such as Microsoft Access and Excel, as well as creating and maintaining geodatabases and maps utilizing ArcGIS.
Routinely QA/QC datasheets and entered data.
Maintain and clean field equipment.
Assist with preliminary data summaries and analyses, technical report writing, and database management.
Develop monthly and annual reports.
Essential Functions:

Lead and participate in survey crews that evaluate streams for restoration potential, inform restoration measures, enhance fish passage, stream flow and degraded habitat.
Monitor non-natal streams physical, chemical and biological characteristics and identify stressors impacting rearing and spawning salmonids.
Assist in design, development, and installation of components to monitor temperature, discharge, volume and timing of wetted channel during winter base flows.
Investigate juvenile salmonid distribution and condition in non-natal rearing streams and compare to juveniles sampled in other side channel habitats.
Develop GIS maps and layers depicting land boundaries and access points, locations of data loggers, locations of natural or man-made fish passage barriers, etc.
Knowledge Required by the Position:

Knowledge of fish biology.
Knowledge of fish species identification (including ability to identify adult and juvenile Steelhead trout and Chinook salmon).
Knowledge of Salmonid biology and life history.
Knowledge of fish husbandry.
Knowledge of aquatic habitats.
Knowledge of Salmonid spawning methods (including ability to identify fish redds).
Knowledge of the scientific method.
Knowledge of personal computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, publishing software, presentation software, database software, topographic software, and statistical analysis packages.
Knowledge of technical writing protocols.
Knowledge of database management.
Additional Mandatory Skills:

Ability to communicate efficiently and provide oral and written directions.
Compile and collect neat and accurate data.
Use of handheld data recorder.
Specific software skills (Microsoft Access and Excel database, Microsoft Word, ArcGIS, and R).
Conduct water sampling and temperature monitoring (HOBO temperature loggers and software).
Ability to operate handheld GPS, Trimble and Juniper Systems devices.
Operate and trailer motor boats and kayaks.
Ability to swim.
Comfortable hiking for extended periods of time on uneven terrain.
Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Valid driver’s license.
Repair and maintain equipment.
Operation of 4×4 vehicles.

Qualifications
Physical Demands:

Demands can range from sedentary, to moderate –where there is walking, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching, lifting, and bending, to rigorous. In the latter case, the employee must be able to handle buckets of water or gear weighing up to 50 pounds. Long daily periods of hiking, carrying equipment, swimming, snorkeling and/or standing may be required. Some work requires the ability to maintain footing in fast-moving water. Work requires the ability to walk for extended periods in inclement weather on uneven, slippery surfaces and in-river over large cobble or debris.

Work Environment:

A portion of the work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heating and ventilation. The majority is performed in the field where work involves exposure to all types of weather, slippery rocks, trails, irregular terrain, insects, poison oak, rough or fast-moving water, or cold-water temperatures. Work at high elevations or aboard boats may be required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:

A range of education and experience may be presented. At the lower end of the range, candidates must present successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included a major in biological science with at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects and at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying.

At the upper end of the range, candidates must present one year of Specialized Experience** OR a year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position.

**Specialized Experience is experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
