- Description
- The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest is hiring a Fisheries Biologist thru the Resource Assistant Program (RAP). This position will begin in early 2023. Successful candidates will be eligible for permeant positions with the Forest Service Hiring Authority (DHA) after completing this RAP. The full-time equivalent position (FTE) with be a GS- 7/9 in the Fisheries Biologist series (0482).
The successful applicant will travel extensively throughout the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and experience many diverse and breathtaking landscapes. This could be an extremely rewarding position, allowing you to learn many regionally and nationally applied sampling techniques, and gain experience with NEPA, travel planning, and conservation of native fish and important recreational fisheries in the upper Missouri and Blackfoot rivers. The selected RAP will work alongside professional specialists as part of an interdisciplinary team to help protect and monitor natural resources and gain applicable technical skills.

- Qualifications
- Recent or soon-to-be Bachelors and Masters graduates in biology, environmental science, or natural resources are encouraged to apply, in particular those with a strong background in fisheries science.
Preference will be given to candidates that will meet the requirements to be hired into a permanent full-time fish biologist position with the US Forest Service at the end of their assistantship. Strong analytical, organizational, critical thinking, and verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work well independently, with a team of coworkers, and with external partners.
Enthusiasm for working outside, sometimes independently, in all weather conditions.
Ability to learn and follow field safety protocols in order to work safely outdoors in a rugged mountainous area with potential for wildlife including grizzly bears.
Experience in the field driving 4wd vehicles, hiking in mountainous terrain, and wading in variable stream conditions.
Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and preferably GIS.
Ability to work with diverse groups representing a variety of viewpoints and maintain a professional image of the Forest Service and a positive attitude.
Positive attitude, commitment to the position, openness to challenges, and exploring new things are highly desirable.
