Job Summary:

The Fire & Life Safety Specialist position plays a key role in efforts to develop and promote a comprehensive Fire & Life Safety program for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The incumbent will make recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assess hazards so that work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. In addition, this position provides senior level staff assistance and performs technical inspection work for all University of Wisconsin-Madison property within the borders of the state of Wisconsin.
This position will be within the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) department under the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management (FP&M) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. FP&M is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach activities. The EHS department provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, and fire safety.

Responsibilities: Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.
  • 5% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
  • 35% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
  • 5% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
  • 5% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
  • 25% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
  • 5% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes
  • 5% Knox Box inventory management
  • 5% Fire & Life Safety building inspections / re-inspections
  • 5% Collaborate with co-workers and/or vendors to complete fire extinguisher and other fire suppression system inspections and re-certifications
  • 5% Madison Fire Department Facility Inspection data entry / re-inspection follow-up

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $65,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
