Position Summary
The Finance Manager in the Department of Surgery will support the financial operations of the department with a focus in research and grant management. This position will report directly to the Director of Business Administration and will be responsible for the following tasks indicated below.
Responsibilities
-
- Collaborate and manage all aspects of research award process – submission, setup of awards, renewals, issuance of contracts and subcontract agreements.
- Manage day‐to‐day activities related to grants and contracts and ensure compliance with internal and external policies and procedures.
- Oversee post award financial management for all grants and contracts include reconciling and analyzing specific activity on sponsored projects.
- Hold monthly and quarterly meetings with principal investigators regarding research financial actual versus budget and financial forecasts
- Liaise with research clinical trial front-end units and institutional offices
- Perform clinical trial accounts receivable trend analysis
- Prepare and update all P&Ls for research units and non-practice operations
- Process and supervise all labor accounting and ensure appropriate cost allocations are done in a timely manner
- Supervise financial analyst and interns related to research financial transactions
- Attend SPA meetings and forums to continually enhance general knowledge of grants administration and understand emerging changes with federal grant rules and processes.
- Assist with departmental compliance with conflict of interest disclosures and other prerequisite online course completion.
- Manage annual efforts reporting compliance and certification process.
Finance responsibilities:
- Manage research procurement and accounts payable process
- Oversee gift ledgers and ensure appropriate spending
- Supervise and process monthly shared cost allocations
- Review and approve financial transactions
- Prepare and update budgets and participate in the quarterly and annual budget process
- Responsible for all sub-award setup and close-out process
- Supervise department-wide financial systems access process
- Manage NYP special funds and prepare monthly reports
- Monitor and respond to financial transaction requests
- Train department employees on Columbia University policies
- Lead ad-hoc projects and functions as assigned
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent in education and experience.
Minimum related experience:
4 years of related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Advanced excel and database experience preferred.
