Job Description
Under general direction, coordinates and manages unit-wide financial functions, compliance and internal controls including development and implementation of management and financial operations goals. Verifies accuracy and timeliness of financial functions, processes, and accounts for assigned area in a complex unit or department with significant research, operations, and instructional emphasis. Directly impacts the University goal of increasing research expenditures through the effective management of accounts.

Essential Duties
- Assesses unit financial functions and develops and implements procedures and objectives specific to improving operational effectiveness and efficiency within established policies.
- Initiates and prepares financial reports and documents.
- Monitors accounts for the assigned unit, provides budgeting and forecasting support, reviews and approves financial transactions, reviews and consolidates unit-wide account reconciliations.
- Verifies accuracy and efficiency of purchasing transactions to ensure goods, services, and equipment are received in a timely manner.
- Monitors ASU Foundation payments and transfers, manages and monitors staff, Faculty startup funds for smaller accounts.
- Prepares grant documents after awarded, reviews and approves travel requests, may supervise staff, maintains and audits unit-wide financial documentation and files; ensures financial services compliance; internal controls; and other functions designated by unit administrator.
- Supervises and coordinates daily work activities; assigns, prioritizes and organizes workload utilizing knowledge of staff expertise to maximize efficiency and accuracy; monitors status of work in progress and reviews completed work for adherence to established standards.
- Evaluates performance of assigned staff in conjunction with established unit, department and university goals and objectives.
- Recommends and monitors compliance with department policies and procedures.
- Works closely and in conjunction with unit and financial services, advises, interprets and provides direction to management and staff on university rules and procedures, Federal, State and local laws/regulations involving finance.
- Works closely and in conjunction with Financial Services, resolves or assists with the resolution of financial issues.
- Reviews account expenditure requests in accordance with established financial guidelines and policies.
- Participates in a variety of departmental, unit, and university-wide initiatives and meetings to represent unit’s interests in the area of finance and to ensure an integrative/collaborative support of unit and university interests.
- Serves as a representative of the University at state, regional and national organizations, boards, councils and committees as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND five (5) years of related experience,OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

- Experience overseeing finances sponsored/grant accounts.
- Knowledge of financial control principles and practices.
- Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and financial control technologies to include database and general ledger software applications.
- Experience in prioritizing the working rhythms of the core faculty with a holistic understanding of their financial support needs
- Experience in managing multiple responsibilities and projects at the same time
- Experience in determining priorities and which tasks require immediate attention and which can wait
- Experience in work that requires attention to detail, efficiency, and organization skills
- Experience in building strong professional relationships through collaboration and influence without authority
- Evidence of effective communication; flexible communication style based on context and audience
- Experience planning, scheduling, and managing task assignments
- Experience in switching tasks, projects, and responsibilities quickly
- Skilled at quick problem solving, innovative solutions, and adaptability
- Experience with federal, philanthropic, and industry grant-funded projects
Working Environment
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Infrequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
