Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager Budget and Finance, the Financial Coordinator processes payments, expense claims, purchase orders, reconciles p-cards, generates financial reports, reconciles month end and prepares budget variance reports. The incumbent works with the Budget and Finance team on quarterly forecasts, financial reports, analyses and reconciliations.

Additionally, the position is required to work closely with Managers in the Facilities Management and Planning (FM&P) department to process payments and purchase orders, resolve vendor issues and ensure the accuracy of transactions. The incumbent will investigate discrepancies, ensure smooth daily transactions and review with the Manager, Budget and Finance for any areas of concern while advising managers on further analysis or action required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries
  • Monitoring department budget to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
  • Recording detailed transactions for many accounts including payroll
  • Generating standard financial reports
  • Keeping well-informed on purchasing and/or procurement policies and procedures
  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of information
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Liaising with internal contacts to resolve accounting, payroll and/or HRIS processing issues

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years experience of related Finance or Accounting in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience required includes monitoring departmental budgets including making recommendations on allocations, recording detailed transactions, reconciling information, producing statistical information, generating reports, and identifying and resolving discrepancies
  • Experience in budgeting and financial analysis, financial reporting including experience in preparing financial statements, financial forecasting, supporting documentation of long-range plans
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to work in a high-volume environment that requires multi-tasking on varied duties and an ability to prioritize effectively and work under pressure
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply financial policies, procedures and regulations in a variety of situations with the ability to professionally communicate financial procedures to a wide range of individuals
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems required
  • Advanced experience working with MS Office Suite (i.e. Excel; Word and Outlook)
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and tact in dealing with managers, colleagues and vendors
  • Adept at managing time effectively and paying careful attention to detail are crucial

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Professional accounting designation or working towards a designation preferred
  • Knowledge of the University Financial Information System (i.e. SAP R/3)
