| Position Description | The Harvard University Herbaria (HUH; http://huh.harvard.edu) invites nominations and direct applications for the Harvard University Herbaria Farlow Fellowship. The goal of the program is to facilitate research on and curation of the collections at the Farlow Herbarium, the HUH unit that contains more than 1.5 million specimens of fungi, bryophytes, algae, and lichens. The Farlow Herbarium is supported by complementary libraries and archives that are a rich resource for rare books, manuscripts, field notes and historical correspondence, as well as current monographs, journals and electronic media. We especially seek outstanding early-career scientists and collections professionals who see new opportunities and innovations for collections-based research and curation. The successful candidate will have a research program involving collection-based taxonomy and/or systematics in groups represented in the Farlow collection and a strong interest in the curation and stewardship of these world-renowned collections. The HUH include six collections that, together, form one of the largest university herbarium collections in the world, and the third largest herbarium in the United States. With its state-of-the art research laboratories, computational facilities, and world class libraries, the HUH have been a centerpiece of biodiversity science. Fellowship Details The Harvard University Herbaria Farlow Fellowship is awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to 3 years total. In addition to maintaining a collections-based research program, the Fellow will also participate in planning curatorial projects, specimen identification, on-going institutional projects and collection organization. The opportunities and responsibilities associated with this fellowship include: 1) establishing an independent and/or collaborative research program at the Farlow Herbarium; 2) curatorial oversight of segments of the Farlow Herbarium in coordination with the Curator and the Director of Collections; 3) aiding in identification and preparation of grant proposals for research and/or curation projects; 4) publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals; and 5) disseminating results broadly to the scientific and naturalist communities. The Fellow will work under the mentorship of a Harvard University faculty member and in collaboration with HUH curatorial staff. The application deadline for this program is December 31, 2022. The Fellow must initiate his or her term at the HUH within one year of notification of award and will be expected to be in full-time residence during his or her tenure. The Harvard University Farlow Fellowship provides a modest stipend and an additional allowance for travel and research expenses. |

| Special Instructions | Applicants must have their Doctorate when they initiate their term at the HUH. Fellowships are awarded through a competitive review process. To be considered for an award, please submit: 1. Cover letter 2. Research proposal. No longer than 4 pages, single-spaced, and should describe (i) the nature and scope of the proposed research project; (ii) the approach and methods to be employed; (iii) how the study would benefit from the use of the collections of the HUH; (iv) all laboratory and equipment requirements; and (v) the overall importance of the study. References should be included but do not count as part of the 4-page limit. 3. Research budget. A modest budget is available for research and travel costs. Applicants should submit a simple, 1-page budget that itemizes the research and travel costs associated with the proposed project. 4. Curriculum vitae 5. Three references. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is complete only when all three letters have been received. Letters of recommendation are due within 3 weeks of the application submission. |
