Position Summary

Reporting to the Deputy Faculty General Manager, the Faculty Safety Advisor’s role is to champion and contribute to health and safety initiatives throughout the faculty. They are a trusted and supportive resource for faculty leadership, directors, managers, and supervisors, including Primary Investigators with respect to the University’s Health, Safety and Environment Management System. ­The Faculty Safety Advisor provides advice, guidance and technical expertise to the Faculty on matters related to occupational health and safety, emergency and risk management. They are a standing member of the FoMD Health, Safety, and Environment Committee and will be the designated alternate Chair and representative on University HSE committees as required.

Duties

  • Provide resources and support to faculty and staff in the development, implementation, and continued administration of health and safety, security and emergency management systems and best practices.
  • Primary faculty and staff contact for health and safety issues and serves as the first point of contact for University Health, Safety, & Environment.
  • Actively participates in healthy and safety, security and emergency management committees and incident investigations.
  • Assist supervisors with customizing central HSE resources for their areas of responsibility.
  • When central resources don’t exist, create template Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that can be customized by units in FoMD. Supports units with customization as necessary.
  • When central resources don’t exist, create template Hazard Assessments that can be customized by units in FoMD. Supports units with customization as necessary.
  • Establish and evaluates safe and secure work practices, occupational health and safety, security and emergency management best practices and hazard evaluations.
  • Assist supervisors with implementation and compliance with established University of Alberta safety, security, and emergency management policies and procedures.
  • Works with faculty leadership and FoMD HSE Committee to establish physical security, emergency management and occupational health and safety best practices.
  • Liaises with Campus Security Services, Office of Emergency Management, and Facilities and Operations as needed.
  • Recommends reasonable and practicable policies and procedures that assist the departments to eliminate or minimize, through appropriate control measures, security and occupational health and safety hazards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a Health, Safety, and Environment or related such as environmental sciences
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Three to five years experience working in a health and safety role
  • Occupational/industrial hygiene background preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal, provincial, and municipal OHS and emergency management legislation, standards and codes
  • Ability to find workable solutions that meet regulatory requirements
  • Strong relationship building and communication skills and the ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Specialized safety training and certification in areas such as WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, proper chemical handling, storage procedures, and spill cleanup management (such as HAZWOPER)
  • Familiarity with various safety related instrumentation and test equipment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Safety Loss and Management
  • Working knowledge of University of Alberta procedures and policies
  • Familiarity or working knowledge of the following:
    • Chematix – Chemical management software
    • Cascade
    • REMO
  • Current first aid training and CPR
