Faculty Positions in Systems Hub, HKUST (GZ)

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

Job Details

Established in June 2022, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou, HKUST(GZ)) is a higher education institution jointly governed by the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. HKUST(GZ) is situated in the center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, one of the most vibrant and dynamic regions in the world, and the establishment and development of the University is facilitated under the “Overall Plan of Nansha of Guangzhou for Deepening the Comprehensive Global Cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao” issued by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

HKUST(GZ) aims to craft an innovative approach to cross-disciplinary education and research and to meet the needs of an ever-evolving world. In response to the increasingly complex challenges in this rapidly changing world, HKUST(GZ) adopts a first-of-its-kind academic structure featuring “Hub” and “Thrust” instead of “School” and “Department” to facilitate cross-disciplinary innovation and to extend the knowledge frontiers across disciplines. HKUST(GZ) comprises four Hubs, namely Function Hub, Information Hub, Systems Hub, Society Hub and offers 16 postgraduate degrees. At steady state, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate students will reach a total of 10,000. Teaching and research at HKUST(GZ) are carried out in an outstanding intellectual environment that is rich in technical resources.

The Systems Hub hosts the following four Thrusts: Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering (BSBE), Intelligent Transportation (INTR), Robotics and Autonomous Systems (ROAS), and Smart Manufacturing (SMMG). These highly integrated and interlaced disciplines not only emphasize theoretical framework and experimental validation, but also attend to computational modeling and simulation. The Hub is expected to grow substantially in the next few years in terms of academic staff, programs, resources, and facilities. Now, we invite applications for tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor).

Lecturer for Systems Hub Core Course

Systems Hub is recruiting a Lecturer with primary responsibility for teaching SYSH5000 (Model-Based Systems Engineering), and with the flexibility to contribute to the teaching of other related courses as needed. We welcome exceptional candidates who are enthusiastic about cross-disciplinary education and innovative teaching methods, and have demonstrable expertise and teaching experiences in related areas.

  • About SYSH5000 course

SYSH5000(Model-Based Systems Engineering) is a Hub core course for all SYSH research postgraduate students and an elective option for students from other Hubs. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a contemporary systems engineering methodology that uses conceptual models for communication between system architects, designers, developers, and stakeholders. Object-Process Methodology (OPM) is an MBSE language and methodology for constructing domain-independent conceptual models of all kinds of systems. The course provides students with basic knowledge and tools for MBSE, focusing on conceptual modeling of systems, giving learners a competitive advantage over their peers.

  • Key Responsibilities
        1. Plan, design and deliver SYSH5000 for research postgraduate students each regular term;
        2. Mentor student groups in SYSH5000 and oversee their performance and assessment;
        3. Promote SYSH5000 across Hubs/Thrusts and establish it as a widely recognized course within and beyond the university;
        4. Contribute, as appropriate, to the teaching and development of other related courses in the Hub.

Qualification of Candidates

  • Applicants must have a PhD degree in relevant fields. The appointees are expected to establish an independent and internationally competitive research program. Teaching responsibilities include postgraduate and undergraduate courses.
  • English serves as the language of instruction and administration at HKUST (GZ). Applicants are expected to be proficient in English.
  • Senior faculty members are expected to have demonstrated commitment to teaching and strong performance in related areas, as well as experience and preparedness in designing interdisciplinary curricula and programs. Additionally, they should have a track record of leadership in both research and service to the academic community and/or the public.
